I found a 302 engine and trans out of a 79 LTD police package, its $400 for both and said to be in very good condition,... i was wondering if i should try to get this, to put in my 76 maverick as compaired to my 250 I6 with a c4 tranny.
i dont know, i'm going off what the man said... it might be a 351,..all i remember hearing was " police package" and i stopped paying attention and started daydreaming of smokin tires and whippin the pants off mustangs...
It ain't quite that easy. There are alot of other factors. I think you would be better off finding a 87-93 5.0 HO motor and adding a few things like cam, intake, carb, headers, stuff like that. Then you need to get your gearing right for what you use the car for. Then you can go have some fun, but don't get to high on your horse.
79 was a very bad year for V8s. If you just want to do a mild swap to rid of your I6, then fine... but if you want to have something durable and powerful, use another year engine core. If you want to get best bang out of the stock block/head combo, go for something before 74 (and plan on rebuilding/modding). Late 80s HO heads are supposed to be good too, but the blocks are thin and lack some provisions needed for carburation without some changes. Good luck Dave Edit: If you are not reading or willing to build an engine from ground up, get a crate engine of some sort.
It'd be better than the 6,but not much,'79 302s barely have120hp(or less?)and 351s aren't much better.Go for a roller 302 HO like Jamie said.
$400 is a great price for and engine and trans, I would say go for it. All 302's can be made to make good power (maybe except for 74-76 since they have higher deck height) From the information I can find is that in stock trim it should make 140 Hp and 250 Tq it has 8.4 to 1 compression with 67cc chamber heads and 2 barrel carb.. The cam specs are 244 intake dur 256 exhaust seat to seat and lift is 377 intake 393 exhaust. So as you can see with a cam change, carb, intake and headers you could make some good power. You could also get alot more power with a head change. I would keep it over 63cc chambers with cast pistons, this should get you closer to 9 to 1
