First of all, I am not a mecahnic. So with that said, until my car warms up I hear a slight ticking. This has been going on for about three weeks give or take a week. I get into my car to go to work tonight and start it up and the ticking is the loudest I have heard it. Kind of a rough start also, so I turned it off and decided to take my wifes Jeep to work instead so not to risk hurting the engine. I researched online and I figured it may be the lifters, but now I am concerned I may have a major problem. I only have 63,000 original miles on this car, 27,000 I have put on myslef in the last five years. I have had oil changes on a regular basis except for the last 5,000 miles but had the oil changed about three weeks ago. The engine is an inline 6. Am I looking at some major repairs now?

check the oil level to assure it is full and if so change the oil and filter yourself with the same oil/filter you always use.

Could be an exhaust leak, depending on where the sound comes from. As everything heats up and expands, the leak goes away.

Sounds like your lifters were clattering because your low on oil. When you turn your key to the ON position, but don't start the car, does your oil light come on in the instrument cluster?

the lifters can also start to tick when the oil is too dirty, if that isnt it check the exhaust manifolds.

Definately could be low oil, as well as a exhaust leak.

Couldn't hurt to ad a bit of lucas oil treatment next time you change the oil
