Yes...I know timing in an engine is everything....The question is...I think i know what im doing but PLEASE someone stop me before I do it, that is....if im about to mess something up...79 302 motor...Installed new timing chain, lined everything up precise....dot to dot....was set to 0*tdc....I have been told they do run optimal at 10*btdc for bone stock engine....Im gonna attempt to remedy this using the following plan, Bring engine on compression stroke and line 10*BTC with the pointer...Then i am going to loosen the hold down bolt and pull up just enough to turn the rotor freely by hand to line it up at, or just before the #1 post on the cap...Novice here just want some input before proceeding
you shouldnt need to pull up on it unless you pulled the dizzy when you did the chain or dont have room to move it enough, just twist the dizzy to point at the number one post around 10btdc. once you get it started, youll want to use a timing light and get it dialed in though.
More problems on the 302 Dern thing is really starting to bug me and i have about had it......set it to 10*btdc...timing is now there but the carb, power, and acceleration are not there and far from being there....Sure it starts and runs...Tried to adjust the carb with no results...Carb kinda stumbles its way thru the RPM's when you revv it...I have no clue as to what is wrong with it.....all vacuum lines are as they were and everything is in order......Whet the hades is wrong?????
Did you make sure you put it on the proper side of the #1 post on the cap? You need to make sure that you know which way the rotor button turns so you know where to point the rotor. Just asking...............
tooth off on the cam timing maybe? Seriously, timing might be everything, but don't put too much thought into it or it'll eat your lunch. Just put it close to 10, start it up, THEN set it with a timing light while it's running. You might find that running it at 12 or 14 deg. could prove to be a better setting. Never know unless you try it.
