timing question

    my nephew and i are trying to get his 75 maverick with 250 6 cyl. running .were should the vac. advance be at when its a 6 degrees there was no dist.in the car when he got it.

    tbuck; put a socket on the balancer bolt, bring the engine around until the timing pointer is at TDC on the balancer (pull a plug, and you can hear the compression). Be sure you are on the compression stroke. Find the #1 plug wire on the cap and set the distributor where the rotor points to #1. That should get the car started, and then set it with a light. Also, be sure to disconnect and plug the vacuum advance hose. When the timing is set, return the hose to the advance can. That should do it.
