What is the biggest size that you guys have gone with without doing an cutting.

I don't want to do any of that yet but I would like to put at least 16in rims on my 70 Mav. If I can't get 16's on there without turning wheels all the way then I can juts go wiht 15. Also what size would the back be with same size rims as front?

Good question. I have been trying to figure this one out myself. As soon as I see tires on a Mav that look good, I am told it has been tubbed out, new differential, etc. I will watch this thread...

I fit 28x12.5-15`s in the rear,as well as 275/40/17`s in the rear with no problems,as long as you have the right offset wheels you can fit alot of tire in there.I`ve even seen 20`s on these cars before.I`m trying to find a set of 18" Bullitts or FR500`s for mine.

If you have a 4 inch backspace you will be fine as long as the wheel is 8 inches wide. 9 inch wide wheel is the wides you can go, but the offset has to be perfect (I DO MEAN PERFECT). 275/40-17 is the biggest tire I have seen with a wide contact patch. 255/45/18 is the tallest tire I have seen. You can run a 20 as long as you roll the inner fender on the rear but a 17 or 18 will fit the front but you have to run a small sidewall tire. EXAMPLE:245 or 235/40/17...235/35/18 P.S. Don't lower the car to much if you plan on using the big rims. Lower the car frist than find the right size. You have more tire sizes than fender size.

Anyone here running the Vintage 48's? They are 16x8. I have wanted to use those on my 70, but I am a bit nervous of buying a set and have them not fit. Vintage Wheel Works suggests 245/50/16 front & 255/50/16 rear for a 67-70 Mustang. Is the 67-70 Mustang wheel well the same size as the Maverick or is it bigger? I don't want the wheels to stick out of the fenders. The back spacing is 4.5".

Anyone know if this setup will work on the 70?

The 4.5 backspace on an 8 inch rim will clear but you are most likely will need spacers & longer wheel studs. I have 17x8 with the same backspace. The rim without a tire on it is about an inches from the leafspring in the rear. In the front it's mighty close the to bracket that holds the bump stop. I took mine off but my front is so stiff I don't think I will need it. The tire sizes sounds like the will work if not maybe a little smaller in the front. We need around a 4.0 or 4.25 Backspace to fit right.

This board deals primarily with the 1970-1977 Ford Maverick and the like bodied 1971-1977 Mercury Comet. Google the Comet East Car Club for better help.

I have another tire question... I found a 16 rim with tire size P205/60 R16 91T. The offset is 5 x 4 1/2, which I believe is correct for my 75 Maverick, could someone please confirm that this tire/rim combination will fit my car?

well #1 the offset is NOT 5 x 4 -1/2 that is the lug pattern. #2 those tires would probably fit but a 205/60 -16 is a really odd size tire

Anyone have an opinion of how this would look on the Maverick?
