I have never done it, but it all depends on your skill level. If one had no skills....the modifications will be extensive. This set up was never available from the factory, so it will take a lot of work.

Question is why would you want to put a 2.8 in? Aren't these engines know for not being very reliable?

85 Rangers came with a Mazda (2WD) or Mitsubishi (4WD) transmissions bolted to the 2.8 and 2.9 engine. Are you sure it is a t5?

His should be the Mitsubishi transmission it's a 5 speed.

I'm familiar with the Mazda transmissions, they suck, I wouldn't put one on a go-cart. The Mitsubishi transmission was weaker if I recall.

I would say, the 5 speed will require serious and considerable fabrication to get it in the tunnel, and the shifter in the car. You WILL be making a new access point to the shifter, as it will be about a foot closer to the firewall.

I had to replace the cluster gear in my old 85 Ranger 4x4...and I always drove the truck like an old lady. I couldn't imaging a transmission weaker than the Mitsubishi.
