I picked up a toploader a couple months ago, now I am in the process of getting all the parts together to put into my Maverick. I am looking today at what hurst shifter and installation kit to use. The id tag on the trans is RUG-3E (Mustang,Cougar 302,351) but the tailshaft casting number is C70R-7A040-A (1966-68 Fairlane, Cyclone, Ranchero, Torino 289, 302, 390 1966-69 Falcon 289, 302 1966-69 Mustang, Cougar 390) Since the installation kit is based on the tailshaft I should get the kit that matches that right? Just want to make sure I am thinking right before I start ordering parts. Stephen
I am struggling to sort out the details in my head here, but my first thought is to look at the Hurst chart of bolt patterns. Hurst has a number for each tranny, 431... 432... 433... etc. The install kits are based on these numbers. They have an illustration out of each tail shaft bolt pattern, so you can determine which kit fits your tranny. I am trying to remember exactly where I have seen that set of drawings, but I'll have to look. If I find them, I'll let you know. May be as easy as going to their site. I had to research and find my pattern too. Just out of curiousity, have you measured the input nose of the tranny? The part that goes into the crank... Also, what is the overall length of the tranny? From bellhousing mount surface to the end of the tail shaft, without the yoke...
Looks like a 433 to me... http://www.hurst-shifters.com/catalogpdf/8-Trans-ID-Charts/ManltransID3.pdf
That is what I was thinking too I just wanted to make sure. The length is 24" and the input shaft measures 1 1/16"
You have a shifter (shown behind the tranny in the picture), all you will need is the correct handle to bolt on to it. If the shifter needs to be rebuilt (ie its sloppy or worn) you can usually get parts to do that. The handles are shaped for the application and once you bolt it in and get dimensions that will clear the seat, dash, CD player and GPS, close to equally on each sides maximum throw. If you just want to replace the shifter for a specific brand and need to know which kit to get see if they have one for your Maverick or a Comet - or some car with similar dimensions between the tranny, seat and dash area. Most likely it will be a late 60s Falcon or Mustang but not the Fairlane - it was a much bigger car at that time. I hope this has helped......
Hey, I just noticed in your pic, there is a mounting plate hiding behind the tail shaft there. Does that one not fit your tranny? It looks like it is still bolted to the shifter.
I do have a shifter, it was with the tranny when i bought it. The mounting plate that I have puts the shifter above the tailshaft and it seems that it will put the shifter thru the trans tunnel. As far as the handle, the shifters I have looked at, the handle is bent so that it comes thru the floor in the middle of the car (or a least closer to the middle) I have looked to see if I could just get the handle and use the shifter I have but it seems that hurst doesn't sell that handle without a shifter Here is the shifter bolted to the trans, to show how high it sits. Also here is a pic of the handle I would like to have.
check out the center picture on this previous post of mine. http://mmb.maverick.to/showpost.php?p=392846&postcount=7 I swapped a guy my C4 for a toploader out of his 68 mustang. It had a hurst comp plus shifter. His girl friend couldnt drive a stick . I did all the work and got it, couldnt tell you much more that that...was 28 years ago. Robert
In the third post there is a Hurst shifter with a "bolt-on" handle. You can get different handles for that shifter. Some Hurst shifters have handles that are welded on and they are not available separately. Is the shifter in the photo in post #3 yours?
Couple points: The mount on that shifter is wrong. That mount is the one that comes with the Super Comp shifter. (Not sure on the name there, but it's a short and straight shifter... I have it in my car.) The Comp Plus shifters come in 2 styles: 1: OEM. They came in the cars stock. These have thinner shift rods and non-removeable handles. 2: Aftermarket. These are identical in look to the OEM, but have stout hardware and the handles are removeable. Replacement handles run about 70 bux each at Summit. HEY MAN... I just studied the pic again. That shifter is the same one as I have. Someone just replaced the handle on it. The one that comes with that shifter is only 7" long overall and is perfectly straight. That's a good shifter there. It does sit high in the hole, they say it won't work with a console. At least the type of console that goes around the shifter.
Here's mine. I just used the super boot I had laying around when I installed it. It'll look alot better with a smaller boot.
The tailshaft housing on that Toploader is a 390 tailhousing. Same one I swapped onto the Toploader in my Ranger. Look at the input shaft front snout. Is it about 3/4" long, or about 1-1/4" ? If it's the shorter, it's not going to work with a small block bellhousing. The snout will fall just short of the pilot bearing/bushing.
