I have a 74 Maverick with a 302 and a C4 transmission, it had an inline 6 before. Now we are rebuilding the transmission and we're putting a new torque converter on because the old one was burnt up. We have tried three different torque converters but the bellhousing wont bolt up tight to the motor now (about 1/8th inch gap) Does anyone have any suggestions? :hmmm:

You are not setting the converter deep enough into the transmission. You should feel 3 clicks. You could damage the pump if you used the bolts to pull the trans to the block.

Did you spin the converter clockwise to seat it when you installed it? You should hear three clicks as it turns and locks into the pump, etc. Good luck!

is the converter seated all the way in?
also put the converter onto the flexplate first and see if it will bolt up.

Thanks for all the replies. Unfortunately I'm just trying to get suggestions to tell my "mechanic" (he's had my mav for two weeks!) he called tonight saying he doesn't know what to tell me and that I might have to get a different transmission, but from what I've read on here it's possible to rebuild a c4 from an inline 6 for a v8. This transmission has been in and working (just not very good) with my v8 for the last 8 months. He said he'd "try to figure it out" and call me on Monday. Ugh... I'm just a 19 year old girl who wants my baby back in running condition!

if it has bolted up to the motor before, it will bolt up again. it sounds like something is going on with the converter.
...just hope he hasn't tried to pull the bellhousing up with the bolts...:yup:
