Are you foot breaking or using a transbrake. If your footbreaking getting it to go to 3500 will be impossible. If you are questioning the stall speed, the best and easiest way to check it is to drive the car about 10-15 mph in high gear, stare and the tach and mash the loud pedal. Watch the tach as it will flash to the stall speed and hesitate for a moment. When it hesitates thats close to the stall speed. Hope this helps ....Brian

    Is it a new converter?

If it is supposed to be a 3500 and it's that doggy, it may be possible that the sprag is broken. That'll sure cause a low stall speed...and it'll be a slug off the line because the sprag is supposed to be stationary which multiplies torque. No torque multiplication=low performance especially in our small block cars that need as much torque multiplication that they can get. Relatively speaking of course. Relative to the "norm" 555, 565, and 598" big blocks that are so common nowdays.

Only way to know if a sprag has failed is to (1) open the transmission and inspect the pan for metal shavings or (2) pull the converter out and have it cut open.

Was it a custom converter of an off-the-shelf generic deal?

If it's a race car, have the sprag removed and have them put a hub in it to make it spragless. One less thing to go wrong and more consistent-especially in the 1/8 mile. However you probably don't want a spragless on a street car as they aren't as efficient at cruise speeds and they create a little more heat.
