    Hello,

New to this site.....Hello to all!!!!

I have a 2006 V6 XLT Ford Escape and would like to tow a 1976 Ford Maverick from Arizona to Louisiana. Can I use a tow dolly or do I need a car carrier?

    Thanks So Much!:tiphat:

    Thank You!

Thanks so much for the quick response.....someone told me if I used the tow dolly, I would damage the engine....I decided to ask the question on this forum because I don't know anything about towing a vehicle.

    Thanks Again...........

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
Since its a rear wheel drive vehicle its best to remove the driveshaft so you wont damage the transmission.

Only 4 nuts hold the driveshaft in. I would remove the driveshaft also just to be sure.:)

You can pick up a plastic plug to stick in the back of the transmission to keep the fluid from running out when the drive shaft is removed. Online stores offer them and I expect they're available at auto parts stores too.

    Use a tow dolly

Before towing your Maverick behind your tow vehicle, it is advised that you pull your driveshaft out. I am not sure about causing any engine damage, but I can guarantee you that you will destroy the rear tailshaft bushing and rear seal in the back of your transmission. You can take a couple of baggies and a couple of rubber bands to put over the tailshaft of the tranny to keep the fluid from leaking out. Happy towing.

In my opinion, the Escape is way too small to be puling a vehicle half way across the country.

I agree, I have a toyota tundra V6 automatic and I'm afraid to tow my mav to Ky... I'm not worried about the V6 it's the automatic trans that worries me....

I agree, I wouldn't use the Escape to tow with. If I'm not mistaken, I don't think it's designed to tow more than 1000lbs, check the owners manual. If you saw how small the internal transmission components are that you will be loading with at least an additional 2800lbs, I'm betting you wouln't want to tow with it either. Not to mention the Escapes' brakes are not designed for that either. I would definitely try to borrow a truck. Even a light duty pickup truck has better tow characteristics than an Escape.(front wheel drive car based platform)

junk pickups are cheaper than new transmissions
