I have a leaky automatic C4. I think it is coming out of the control lever (or shifter shaft seal). I already changed the pan gasket. The leak is coming from higher up. It definitely drips down the control lever. Is there anything higher up on the C4 that it could be leaking from? I saw a thread on fixing the shifter shaft seal on a manual C4 but is it hard for a tranny noob to do this on an automatic? or maybe they're the same, idk. Any help would be great. Transmissions are scary :hide:

shifter shafts...they are tricky and break easy...BOO !!!
do you have a floor shifter now? are you planning on one in the future? if so now would be the time to install it, being you are going to have to remove and flip the shifter shaft then...:yup:

I don't have a floor shifter. I want one, but this leak is the last thing keeping my car from being on the road. Kind of just trying to fix it or get it fixed at this point and I'll worry about a floor shifter when I can worry about it at my leisure. I'm already two weeks late in leaving town. Just have to get the car on the road first. So you would recommend not trying this myself then? Do you have to drop the transmission out to do it? (that might be a deal breaker as for me doing it myself)

is it leaking around the shifter shaft or through the center of it where the kickdown attaches? i had the kick down leaking years ago and bought an o ring and replaced it without having to drop the pan. the shifter itself is a pain like frank said....

oh, idk. I thought the shifter shaft was the only thing on that side that fluid could leak out of...

It is an easy fix. You will need to take the pan off and remove the nut on the inside of the tranny holding the shifter in place.

anyone know a link to a good diagram of this section of a C4? if not that's straight. I'll try it myself anyway cuz I'm daring and dangerous :p. Tried to find one online but the ones I found mostly stink.

Drop the pan and you can't miss it. I don't remember if you gotta take out the vb or not.

Valve body. You will see it when you drop the pan. Take the bolts out and it will drop out.

if you don't know what a...V B...is, you...don't want to do this...
there are springs-and-things that come out when removing the VB...
do you have an old C4 laying around that you can take apart first.
breaking the nut loose is where you can break the shiftershaft...

I don't really know what anything is in a transmission. reading diagrams. nope. no extra C4 laying around. Breaking the shifter shaft is the big thing I'm concerned about. Not sure how easy I can get a replacement yet. The whole putting it back together is a concern too. If i put it back wrong I wouldn't even know until it breaks... need to find a good diagram or I'm thinking this one goes to the shop.

oh, anyone got a guestimation at about how much something like this would cost? I've only had tranny problems once and I opted to send that car to the dump.

You do have to remove the VB. I just looked. It is rather simple. There is a spring under the filter that needs to go back in.

...and the ...tang...on the shiftershaft (if he doesn't break it off) has to go into the correct slot on the shiftershaft shuttle valve...:yup:
