Hello, All I installed a new performance automatic c-4 transmission. Now the engine revs between 2nd and 3rd.(plenty of fluid) Also when slowing down it lurches from 2nd to 1st and pings the drive shaft.(sometimes) Thanks for any info.
Is it flaring at low or high rpm shift's? Depending on the valve body and other mod's that have been done to the tranny, you may need a higher or even lower stall converter, or shift linkage adjustment as stated. Is it a PA brand trans or one that was built up by someone else? Wouldn't hurt to call the builder or PA and explain what it is doing. May be just the nature of the beast with a particular valve body or shift kit etc.
It revs when I leave a red light slowly. If I leave quick no flare up. It is straight from P.A. I called them in Maryland and the very grumpy man said put in another quart of fluid. Didnt help. Another said there aint enough vaccum the cam is too big . I did mess with with the linkage, didnt help. Anyway thanks for the info.
The 2 - 3 flare is due to the 2nd gear band releasing before the hi gear clutches engage. It means that there is either too much play in the high clutches (not likely with a new tranny), the 2nd speed band is not properly adjusted (possible), Low fluid level (check it in park with the engine running), or linkage misadjustment. I think you should readjust your linkage as follows: Perform these adjustments in the order they are presented. Each successive adjustment relies on the preceding adjustment(s) in order to be accurate. Set the parking brake and block the wheels. Shut the engine off and remove keys from ignition switch before making these adjustments: Throttle Linkage: With the throttle pedal pressed and held to the floor Adjust linkage at the carburetor to ensure that the throttle plates are completely open without binding or moving over center. Check to be sure that engine idle is not impaired and is properly adjusted. the two adjustments that follow are best done with the car jacked and blocked off the ground so that you can access the linkage under the car. Kick-Down Linkage: With the throttle held in the Wide Open Throttle position and the kick-down rod held fully depressed: Move the adjusting screw to provide .060" clearance between the adjusting screw and throttle lever. Shift Linkage: Place and hold gear selector lever in "Drive" and against its stop. (toward low gear) Loosen the adjustment lock-nut at the transmission case lever. Remove the linkage rod or cable end. Shift the manual lever to the "Drive" position. Adjust the linkage to go on the manual lever without moving it in either direction. Tighten the lock-nut and check the operation of the linkage from inside the car. Readjust as required. the following adjustment should be done after fluid is added to the transmission, when the engine can be started. Neutral Start Switch: (for case mounted switch) Place the transmission in neutral. Loosen the two bolts that attach the switch to the transmission case. Gently rotate the switch assembly back and forth until a #43 (.089") drill bit can be inserted through the alignment hole in the switch housing. Lock the switch in place with the two bolts and test the operation of the switch. The engine should crank only in "Park" or neutral. In reverse the backup lights should come on. Band Adjustment: snug front band & back out 1 1/4 turns snug the rear band & back out 2 3/4 turns TransmissionAdjustments.doc copyright © 2006 Paul Stephens ============================================== You should disregard the band adjustment if your transmission builder has different specs. Contact the builder to get his specs for band adjustment. The pinging that you are hearing sounds like your timing is too far advanced - try retarding the timing in stages to get rid of the pinging.
paul is the trans guy fo' sho' so, follow his advice, and im sure youll see better trans performance, and less woes.
JACKPOT!!!! Thanks PaulS for taking the time to post all that. Time to crawl under the beast again. greasemonkey, I leave it in "D" most all the time. Thanks everyone for the info.
