trans filter help

    installing new filter in mav and dropped the filter out comes spring and presure valve is this all there is when you pull the filter? I have this plastic ball with a stem and Im not sure if it was part of the filter assembly or not found it in the drain pan. help

    Mitch,
    Hope the project is going well. I just did a filter on a 73 C4. Mine had just a spring under the filter metal tab and a small metal piece at the end of the spring down in the valve body. The metal piece had a smaller dia portion that fit in the spring and the other end was sort of a cup shape. I did not see any check balls associated with this, although there are small check balls in the valve body. Hope that helps, others may have better information, that was just what I noticed on mine...

    Tanner pulled the filter and its been a long time from my last filter change so I wasnt sure if there was more than the spring and valve. found this plastic dohicky that must belong to the mower in the drain pan. alls good in Iowa get back to you soon gotta go put this filter in so Tan can run the ave tonite!!     The plug you found is used by the factory to keep dirt out of the dipstick hole during installation. When they put the dipstick tube in place the plug is pushed into the pan. When you find one it shows you are the first to pull the pan since the transmission was placed into service.
    It should be good luck - it doesn't happen often after 30+ years!
    It does show how strong these C4s are - never been serviced .....

    ...sounds like his "last" filter change was on another C4...:D
