Okay, so I have a '62 Comet with a 302 I swapped into it. The motor/trans(C4auto) came from a wrecked 77' Mav. Time came and I cracked the bellhousing and had to replace it. I just went ahead and got a new trans/bellhousing. How come the new trans wouldn't pump any fluid, all of it just drained out of the tailshaft, nor will it tur in any gear (mind you the egine was running). So I put the new bellhousing on the original trans and the SAME PROBLEM!!! What am I doing wrong:confused:? I can't waste any more trans fluid at this point. Please, any help is appreciated.
C4 I am going to take a guess that the torque convertor is not fully engaged in the front pump or was forced into it when installing and has damaged the pump. Did you reinstall the block to bellhousing spacer plate? As far as the fluid running out of the tailshaft, sounds like the rear seal is shot or cracked housing. An overfull fluid capacity will also run out the top venting device. Did you replace the modulator and gasket? Check the surface of the driveshaft yoke for excsessive wear on the seal portion. Is the input shaft on both transmissions the same(24 or 26 spline) If you put a 26 spline torque convertor on a 24 spline shaft, whiich is smaller diameter, you have no gear engagement. Just a shot in the dark with the info you gave, I'm betting on torque convertor and or installation problem.
c4 I probably sound stupid saying this buuuuuut I'm gonna' say it anyway. I went to a trans. shop today and they told me that I was doing it wrong. "Old Guy" was right, the torque converter was not on the trans all the way. I was never told how to put a trans in properly so I've been trying to figure it out on my own. Doing this I found it easiest to mount the torque converter to the flywheel then gently move the trans into it. Apparently you're supposed to put the torque converter on the trans (woops). But here's my question: How do I know how many splines are in the trans (24 vs 26)? Can I just count them on the tailshaft end? I have 2 torque converters from the late 70's and one from '68. I know the '68 one only fits the smaller bellhousing trans. Another question: Should I use the '77 Maverick C4 or the '68 Torino C4? (I have the smaller flywheel for the '68) Feeling better about my dilemma
C4 Glad to hear you have learned a few tricks of the trade, you might say. If I had about a million sheets of paper, I could write down every time I have screwed up over the years. Don't feel at all bad my friend. The only way to count the splines is with the trans out of the car. If you still have the other one you bought, and it is a 26 spline or a 24 for that fact, pull it out of the trans and insert it into the convertor to verify which one you have. The tail shaft splines are the same number for most Ford tranny's, if you have the code tags on the ones you have, you can tell what the trans came out of. Most of the earlier 60's era C4's are 24 spline input, the trans itself is basically the same. There are 3,4, and 5 disc clutch packs, depending on year and vehicle they are in, more is better. There are also a couple different bolt patterns on the convertor's that dictate which flexplate to use. When installing the convertor, push it back into the pump while rotating. It should seat first on the stator splines and then into the pump drive, takes a little patients sometimes to get it right. Take a straight edge or such and lay it across the bell housing face and measure how far back the convertor sits. Should be somewhere around 1 3/8 to 1 1/2. The local library should have a book on transmissions that gives all this data. After doing several you will be able to feel if it's in the pump all the way. Ford many hundreds of mod's to the C4 and others but most all will work for your application, try and stick with the later stuff. They seem to get better with age, wish that were true in my case.
G!* Damnit!!!! So two nights ago I pulled an all nighter in the garage. It consisted of lots of coffee and my favorite CD played over 13 times. I had the new bellhousing on my old trans. I thought things would go over just fine. It took me close to four hours to realize that the bellhousing was about 1 1/2 inches too deep. The torque converter came no where close to the flywheel when I bolted up the bellhousing to engine. So in short, shit hit the fan. Next try was using the '68 Torino's trans. I had to switch the flywheel (157 tooth) for the smaller bellhousing. I bolted up the bellhousing to engine and then the bellhousing came pretty close the the flywheel. I think I should have spaced the torque converter bolts a little with some washers. But the same problem became when everything was hooked up. NO FLUID WAS PUMPING! Just outta' the tailshaft and whatnot. Should I drop the trans again and fill the torque converter? There is probably at least 1/4 or more of what should be in there i think. This will be my last attempt as it will be the 5th time I've installed a trans on my car (although I'm getting prEtty good at it). My next idea is to drag, pushy, or pull it to my local shop and let the old timers do it (and I'm committed to watching them do it to see how). P.S. Being in collee sucks cause you're always broke.
When I was converting my 73 from a 3 on the tree to a C4 I learned there were some tricks to getting the convertor on. The best way is to literally spin it - not just turn it - but spin it hard while forcing it on - it will "clunk" in and you'll know it ... Dan
I'm sure someone will jump in here, but I would guess since the trans was installed onto the converter while the comverter was bolted to the engine, the transmission oil pump tabs have been broken off due to misalignment while forcing the trans into the converter. Again, that's just a guess.
well you said with the new trans that the torque converter was to far away from the flywheel......if that is the case then i'm thinking you have a c-5 bell housing and a c-4 converter...... the c-5 is a deeper bell housing! we have ran in to this at my work before (Ace Transmission) but without seeing what you have for everyone here it is kinda a guessing game! mavman has a good point also when you didnt get the pump stabed right the first time did you get the tranny bolted up tight to the motor??? if it was a fight to tighten up then you probably did do some dammage. but I do hope you get it worked out.
