ok guys its time to put the engine and trans in, but whenever i put the trans to the engine the converter hangs up and wont spin.if i back it up an 1/8 inch it will spin.i cant seem to find the problem. i made sure the converter was fully seated several times.i made sure the converter nose fits in the crank.if i remove the flexplate and mate the trans, the converter spins freely.i made sure the the flexplate is on the right way.i am kinda at a loss now,any ideas or anything i can check. it is 26 spline c4 on a 91 302.i am using a 157 tooth set up.thanks. this is the flexplate i have http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories this is the converter http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-G2707-10/Application/?prefilter=1
i just stood the trans on end and spun the converter, the center hub moves 1/8" out of round side to side. gonna call summit and see what they say.
took it to a converter shop and it is fine, the shop said there is some play side to side, now i guess i need to make sure the bellhousing and pump are set all the way in.i am open to suggestions on stuff to check.
If you have any long small block head bolts, take 4 and cut the heads off, you can then use these as guide pins in aligning the engine to the transmission. Screw two each per side into the bellhousing bolt holes, Line the studs into the bellhousing holes and slide the engine onto the transmission (or vice versa)
i've been doing something similar by threading some longer bolts in the lower outside corners from the front of the engine.it goes on the dowels fine and slides right up except the last 1/8 inch or so.i do have the block plate installed also.
The bind that is occuring in the last 1/8" is a clearance problem - it shoulf have about 3/16" to 1/4" of play in the torque converter with the engine and transmission bolted together. The converter is most likely not all the way into the pump.
"it is 26 spline c4 on a 91 302.i am using a 157 tooth set up.thanks." is this a...50 oz... motor? http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-F...Q5fAccessories
might could of found the problem, i guess case filled converters and pan filled converters are different depths i will have to check mine http://www.tciauto.com/Products/TechInfo/converter_dims.asp
yep, i have a pan filled converter and i need a case fill converter, i bet the extra .3 inches is causing the binding.now to see if summit will/has a 3000 rpm case fill converter to swap for me. has anyone else had this issue?
i am goin in circles here, converter is fine. now its down to flexplate or running 2 block spacers. can i run 2 spacer plates?
Two spacers is not the answer. The converter and bell have to be matched. The flexplate and the converter have to be matched. The flexplate has to be counter-balanced to the engine. If you have a pilot bearing or bushing in the end of the crank it has to be removed. The converter pilot has to match the crank pilot recess. Take some time to carefully check everything out and correct the problem.
Are you sure the convertor is going all the way in to the bellhousing. There should be 3 clicks going in. If you don't get the last click in it will bind.
