    I have a few questions hopefully somebody can help. I have a 66 mustang transmission bolted up to a 79 302 5.0 and I have a B&M Z Gate shifter.
I drove the car around the block and it never got out of first gear. I tried all 3 speeds Drive 2 (white dot), Drive 1 (green dot), Low and they all seemed to stay in first. Came back and tried getting in the drive way and the car kept rolling backwards. Park does not park it reverses. Is this transmission jacked and needs rebuilt? Does it matter what way the transmission cooler lines go on a champion radiator? Im going to remove the shifter this weekend from the lever and manually move the gears to make sure the transmission works and its not the shifter causing the issue.

Sounds like the cable needs to be adjusted.

When I got this tranny I drained all the fluids out of it even the torque converter and filled the torque coverter with 6 quarts and 4 in the trannsmission pan. The transmission had been sitting for a few years and had white pinkish fluid so I thought I would change it. All the gears worked fine except reverse when I had the back on the jack stands. I dont know if the fluid just hasnt circulated enough or if I need to add two more quarts. I guess I will find out this weekend when I manually change the gears from below. I should probably remove the modulator hose and see if fluid is running out as well. Dont know if this could be the issue.

Son of a BISH. Apparently the Z-gate shifter has two parks. With the way I have it setup its getting stuck in between gears which would explain why sometimes it moves and sometimes it doesnt. I have it on the farthest park when it needs to be on the closet park towards reverse. I will make the change later tonight and post what happens.:drink:

Well I adjusted the cable and every gear worked on the jack stands. I drove it around the block and it would never get out of first gear. Then it would not go anywhere. I turned it off waited a few minutes cranked it back up and first gear worked again. What else is wrong with this transmission? It almost seems as if the fluid isnt cycling through the transmission.

Yes its coming off the intake and going down to the modulator. I pulled the vaccum off and nothing is leaking.

Do you just have a shifter on it? Mine didnt come with a kick down or anything. Just this plastic piece with wires coming off of it. I took that piece off. I think it was the nuetral safety switch and reverse lights.

Before you have it rebuilt you should adjust the shifter with the shifter handle in Drive and the transmission in drive. Adjaust the cable so it just slides into the transmission lever.
Once that is adjusted properly you need to meaure the vacuum at the modulator with a gauge - You need at least 10 "Hg at the modulator for it to work properly - big cams or low compression may cause low vacuum and the C4 won't shift.

Thanks Paul I will check this tomorrow and see what type of pressure im getting. On the modulator it should be pushing the vacuum from the intake to the transmission correct? The transmission works fine when its not under the weight of the vehicle. I will let you know what I find out.

vacuum sucks - pressure pushes. You need a Vacuum gauge to check it and the gauge should read a minimum of 10 inches of mercury (vacuum).

I know this is a stupid Question but wouldn't that suck transmission fluid into my intake?

Not as long as the diaphrgm is in good shape. If there is oil in the hose then you need a new modulator.

Ehhh, wouldn't that indicate the presence of water? Trans is prolly trashed, valves rusted and stuck and all...
