I'm wondering if there's a thread about swapping out the 3 speed to the toploader? Also I found a toploader but I'm not sure the original vehicle it came out of, what should I look for to make it easy on me?

On your toploader there should be an aluminum tag with some numbers on it. My top loader has the sequence RUG AU with the numbers 013612 under it. If you search online for "toploader identification" you will find a site that lists all the codes and what years and vehicles they were in. Mine was a 1970 fairlane with a 390 so it has a large input shaft, which would have to be changed out to fit my 302. Hope that helps a little.

That would be for a '70 Fairlane with a 429, no 390 I know of got the large input trans and the 390 was discontinued after '69...

Ditto, if that's a 70 Fairlane Toploader with a big input, it's from a 429 car and worth big bucks. 390 cars got the small input with the shorter length snout like the big input transmissions. They require a longer pilot bushing to use with a small block bell.
