Hello, I have a '71 Maverick, 200 engine, C4 automatic trans. Well, its leaks are getting prominent. It's never been overhauled (as far as I know), has some 128,000 on it. On a scale of 1 to 10, with ten being, "Aaaack! Don't even think about it!", how hard is it to rebuild?

    Thanks for the advice!

    To rebuild a c4 I give it a 2 out of 10. It's very easy with a book.

If you have no mechanical experience what-so-ever....a 10.

From what I've seen, once the trans is on a workbench, it shouldn't be too hard, but the hard part is removing it, since I don't have the means to raise it much higher than to slide under the car. Also, I'd want to replace all the gears, or at least the ones that have obvious wear on them. And all that fluid! It'll look like a battle scene from "Game of Thrones", if I'm not careful! Thank you all for your advice and comments!

What's your budget? Monster transmission would run you about $1100 for a rebuilt one delivered to your door.
    Tools would be one problem.

Unless it had a mechanical failure gears are almost never worn in a automatic that's behind a low HP engine, the seals, clutches and bands are what fail...

Find a exploded view on line to see if you want to tackle it, without some assistance/guidance no automatic is a job for someone with little or no experience... I rebuilt a couple back in the '80s but probably wouldn't attempt it now(yes they worked and didn't leak)...
