Guys and gals. I am going to pick your brains once again. While doing some trim resto, like the hood molding on our cars, I have found out that they put on a flash chrome to put a brilliant shine on them. I am working out dings and dents and fixing this stuff. But the flash chrome is giving me fits. Sanding it off is a solution, but one I dont like. I have read that muiratic acid will remove it but so far it has proved to be impervious. Does anyone here have any experience in this field? The straightening and buffing is simple bodywork, but removing the flash chrome is killer. They put it on hubcaps too, but time and elements have removed it mostly on them. The higher up the trim, usually the better shape. Any knowledge would be greatly appreciated. Dan
On the anodized front grills on F100's people use oven cleaner to remove the anodizing. Then polish the base metal to a nice shine. clint
When they polish the base metal they are using a drill or bench griner and a polishing wheel with the jewlers rouge I think. I have a wheel for my drill and some little sticks of different grits that will polish about anything. I use it on the headlights of my wife's 95 T-Bird to get the haze off. Works good clint
I put a buffing wheel on one of the ends of my grinder and it works fairly well. I had a hood trim piece that was fairly worn looking and using the wheel and rouge, it ended up looking beautiful. I sold it shortly thereafter and the buyer was thrilled with the way it looked.
