What is the inside of the trunk supposed to look like?
    Paint and finish?
    Anybody got good pictures?

The trunk in my comet has been painted with some black underbody coating that I'm in the process of removing, underneath there is old surface rust and something that looks like a dark gray paint.

Most of the trunks that I have seen came with factory exterior paint dusted
or lightly sprayed-not intended for show. My '74 had the original style grey
carpet covering the floor areas. It was old, stained and not salvageable.
During the resto mine was coated with Rhino-Liner for protection and rust
prevention. I then sprayed the entire trunk area with splatter paint. Splatter
paint comes in various color combos. I chose grey with white and black specks.
Some cars had a procuct in the lower section of the quarters that look like
undercoating. Is this what you are referring to? There are reproduction plaid
mats for Mavericks/Comets but I am not aware of the original trunk carpet being
    reproduced.

Here is a picture of how it looked like when I just started removing the underbody coating. The trunk was completely coated with this stuff, doesn't look good but no serious rust. I scraped away what was loose and used a solvent for the rest.

If you have some trunk photos I'd love to see them, need ideas...

I sprayed mine with duplicolor truck bed liner, looks great, may spray over it with spatter paint using it for an insulator...but may not...

After painting mine with spatter paint, I made up some mats and dividers using speaker carpet and heavy corrugated cardboard. Works good to insulate noise, and to flatten the floor out. I have a '69.5, with a drop-in tank, and it makes the trunk more usefull. No pics right now, but I will put some in this post when I get home. Later,

    Earl

I have just discovered the wonders of hydrochloric acid. This stuff is unbelevable and dissolves rust very quickly and much faster and better than wire brushes grinders and such stuff. I have been reading about this stuff on the net and looking for it in stores with no results until this weekend when I found a can in a paint store (about 33% acid).

Be aware that this is dangerous etching stuff, so use only in a very well ventilated place (preferably use an air mask), protect clothing, and your self, skin and eyes.

    What I did was:

    1. Removed most of the loose rust with wirebrush / sandpaper
    2. Applyed the acid with a brush and waited 10-15 minutes, the rust just disappairs. In places with more rust you may have to apply the acid several times.
    3. Wiped away the fluid that the acid produces with paper towels.
    4. Used an acid primer to cover the area and prevent it from rusting again.

I will then spray the whole trunk with a two component primer and then paint it (still thinking about the final finish).
