I've read through pretty much all the stuff on the trans swaps and haven't found everthing I need. Lots to read and sort out so maybe I missed the answers.

I've got a 1973 Grabber with the V8 and a manual 3 speed on the floor, factory stuff. I want to scrap the 3 speed and go to something more streetable. I am getting lazy in my old age and like automatics but a good 4 or 5 speed would work too.

Here's what I THINK I've read but please correct me if I'm wrong...

Tremec would be a bolt in using my bellhousing (Ford pattern trans). Drive shaft would stay the same (I think). Most expensive trans of the bunch though.

Top loader would be a bolt in using a different bellhousing, shifter would be in a different place, don't know about the driveshaft.

T5 would be the most work. Bellhousing, clutch to cable or mod to use mechanical linkage, shorter (?) driveshaft, shifter would be in a different place.

C4 would require the flexplate, kickdown rod, vac mod tube and starter. Don't know about the length of the driveshaft or shifter though.

Pretty sure the trans crossmember will have to be modified or changed out no matter what swap I make. Really haven't read specifics on whether or not the stock flywheel/clutch will work or not.

Most of my budget this winter is going to the engine, disc brake conversion and paint. Trying to see if I can squeeze in one last thing! That being the case I need to do my best to budget in every piece I'll need.

With an adapter (redily available) between the trans and bell housing the T-5 will bolt in with a mount mod to the X member and shorten the drive shaft. I installed one in my Ranchero that way. No need for cables, Clutch is standard Ford...good idea to change anyway at that point. Shifter location should be about the same.
