I had a question about the trim on the side of the car on both the pass and driver sides. I really dont like that silver trim that goes from the front end all the way to the back. I am thinking of taking it off permanently. Have most of you done this? What looks better to you? Also, theres got to be little pin holes where the trim was stuck on.. right? How is it attached? If there are holes in the body, I'd have to get them filled in so I dont want to remove the trim and then be s.o.l.until I visit the body shop when the Mav gets painted. Thanks so much!
The trim is attached with clips that are bolted to the sheetmetal. If you remove the trim, there will be many holes that will need to be filled. The proper way to do this is to weld them shut, not use body filler. As far as looks are concerned, it's a matter of taste. I happen to like the narrow mouldings but hate the wide ones. Sam
I'm trying hard to have the look of the thin moulding grow on me. Liking it is sure easier than removing it!
I have been going through the samething. I keep talking myself into. I think once my car is repainted it will look a lot better. My biggest problem with it is that one of the end are messed up where the black filler peace. It looks as if some one hit something.
My trim was missing when i got the car so I am stuck with having to fill holes.I am thinking about using a 2 part epoxy to fill them ,like PC7.That or lead. That epoxy is super strong stuff should work as well as lead.
You're asking for trouble if you do anything besides welding them shut. If you take the easy way out now you can figure on paying for a paint job twice - once now, and again when that epoxy pops out. Sam
Sam I know you are right about welding holes up but I do not have a welder nor do i know how to weld not to mention that I can not afford to have a shop weld them for me.I am trying to keep cost to a minimum and that epoxy is used to fix everything from blocks to industrial equement.I may try to lead them.As long as I get a real good bond between the lead or epoxy and body either should work fine.If I can find someone to weld them at a fair price I would rather do that. This a low budget project not a show car but I do see your point.Thanks.
Dave ... Buy me a welder and I'll weld them for yah! I've done a bit of welding before ... just don't have my own equipment! Sorry about not calling this past weekend ... got tied up and couldn't make it.
Dan, I may just buy a welder and give you a call.No money now though. No problem,I got that front apart. Now I am waiting to get all my parts to go back on and cleaning and painting everything.I bought some black epoxy paint made for appliances (by rustoleum)that sure is nice and tough.Wish I could go to swap meet this weekend.
Dave, Ok I got you now; I hope I didn't offend you with my comments, I realize I may have come off a bit brusque. If you want to bring the car to Jersey I'll weld those holes up for you for free! Sam
If you end up using a filler to fill the holes, take a ball pean hammer and slightly dent the hole so it looks like a funnel. This will give more filler on the surface and more resistant to cracking.
Hey sam.....willing to weld up some holes for a fellow Jersey guy? I got the welders, just have ni clue have to use them....
It depends on if the trim was applied at the factory or at the dealer as to whether there are clips or not. On my seventy there were no clips just some very strong sticky stuff holding it on and I remembered the woman I bought it from said she had the trim put on at the dealer about a month after she bought it. Now LDO trim is another story...I tried a product called Magnum Steel and punched the holes inward as Dennis said and its held up fine...SO FAR on the Comet
