we are doing the 302 swap into a 73 two door maverick. the engine and tranny is out of an 81 ltd that we bought for $400. the engine has a freash rebuild and some high performance goodies. but it looks like the tranny may be a FMX. will this fit/work or should i just find a nice c-4?
sorry, i don't know much about the fmx. my tranny book covers c3,c4,c5,c6 and aod. the c4 can be id'd by the 11 bolt oil pan and the fmx has 14 bolts. the fmx is listed in my interchange manual as a medium duty trans. it also has a long extension housing of 16 1/2" or a short one of 12 3/4". hope this is of some help. i've always used the c-4 for mine (drag race only) and never had a problem (knock on wood).
I'm not sure they used an fmx in '81, but not positive. FMX's are easy to identify, they weigh a ton! They are made of cast-iron, making them about twice as heavy as a c4. It's possible that it might be an early AOD, they are identified by a nearly square pan with the rear 1/4 tapering inward. I would bet its either a c5, a c4, a c3 or a AOD. Also, you could look at the shift indicator in the donor car, if it was an AOD, it will have "1-D-OD" instead of "1-2-3"
its probably an aod if it is it should work fine but you will need to make sure you have the right carb the old style kick down will not work properly if you use an aftermarket carb you need to make sure it has the right throtle pressure lever after you install it you need to install a pressure guage on trans it needs to be at 3psi at an idle in drive the main complaint about an aod is that it goes into 3rd and lockup at the same time and it acts kind of doggy at light throttle this might be more info than you wanted but i hope it helps robert
