I recently got a set of used valve covers that had sat in the boneyard for a while. The price was right... free.:bananaman They are

quite rusty, I know the chrome outsides will clean off fine with

an SOS pad but how do I clean the insides under the metal flaps

(splash guard)? Do I need to get 100% of the rust or will a little hurt the engine. Thank You! Ches in Reed Springs

I would clean them off as much as possible. If there is some surface rust that
can't be remove, I would paint or prime the insides with flat paint or primer.

Try a scotch-brite pad for areas on the inside. Don't use it on chrome, they
    work like sandpaper.

Not if you use heat resistant paint for exhaust.
