The next 12 years will see lighter, more aerodynamic vehicles, but some of the most interesting solutions will be found under the hood. Electric vehicles, hybrids, and small, turbocharged engines will power many vehicles, and diesel engines are set to once again infiltrate our borders, but on a grander scale. We talked to Ford Powertrain boss Dan Kapp to better understand why diesel engines are inherently more efficient than petrol engines, and we also discussed how and where Ford will be using diesel going forward. Diesels were mega-cool until prices went up over gasoline! 4.20 a gallon here and rising. Going back to gas engines. Diesels used to pay for themselves in longevity and fuel savings, back when diesel engines were only a small premium AND the fuel was .50 less than gas. Now gas engines being so much cheaper to buy, and fuel being .70 less a gallon, gas burners pay for themselves. Even when they only last a third as long and use more fuel. Done the math myself... I have a fleet of diesels. Ford either better lobby the diesel prices lower AND make sure the premiums on the engines are low... OR they can consider this venture lost before it got off the ground!
