I think I'm going to repaint my dash, and was looking at removing the vin tag so it and the rivets dont get painted over, does anyone know if you can buy those funky looking rivets anyware?
You might try a fastener supply house like Fastenal. There is a store here in Rock Springs.....I can check with them next week,if need be
Are the GM ones the same ? Cause there is a company that sells them www.trimtags.com And Marti sells the Ford door tags and replacement rivets are $1.50 each from them - if it is the same as the dash I do not know. https://secure.alevelhigher.com/martiauto/vinreports.cfm
Here's a thought. When we repainted the dashes on our Mavericks, we never removed the VIN tags. All I ever did was put tape over them and tuck the edges of the tape down as far as I could around and under the tags. After the dashes were painted and the tape removed, you could not tell they were never removed.
I have always done the same as Jean,, but if there are rivets out there, I might just take them off and redo um that way. Dan
I always just rub grease on a tag that I can't remove, then paint over it. When the paint dries, just rub off the grease.
Yea, that would work fine if you are simply repainting the dash. But then there are some of us, like me, who are going from the glove box dash to the package tray dash, and need to swap the VIN plate to maintain the body's original VIN. Somehow, I don't think a cop would like it very much if they found three diffrent VIN's on my car (dash from a 4 door, '69.5 door, and the car's original VIN on the sticker inside the door jam).
I would just tape it up. The VIN rivets on these cars are star style, very unique. You may be better off leaving it on to keep anyone from saying that you ever swapped a VIN. Just my $.02.
Found this in the July 2007 CRUIS NEWS 707/026 – VIN-Tag rivets, N.O.S./O.E.M. factory correct “6 sided rosette style.” rivets for all 60’s – 70’s Mopar/G.M./Ford vehicles. Limited supply 519-322-1870.
Those rivets are officially referred to as "rosette rivets" and several states, including Michigan have passed laws regarding them. In Michigan it is a felony "to knowingly possess, buy, deliver, or offer to buy, sell, exchange, or give away" rosette rivets among other things. The idea is to try and prevent fraud via people switching VIN tags. What I did was take a Dremel tool and carefully cut the bottom of the rivet from underneath and I was able to take the VIN tag and rivets out without visible damage to the rivets from the top. Of course I had the dash competely out of the car because I was putting in the 1980 T-bird dash, so it was not too hard to do. Would be a lot harder with the dash still in the car....
I guess alot of vehicals used those same rivets. I was working on my bosses '77 CJ-7 Jeep today, and noticed it has the same rivets also.
