Got a '68 Fairlane 2 door hardtop in '76. By that time, the small-bumper Mavs around here were already rusted out.

My granny gave me her '70 LTD. The first car I bought (at 15) was a '73 Grabber. v8, buckets, floor shifted c4, it was kinda neat...except for all the rust. Bondo, rattlecan primer and some used slot mags made it semi cool.

    1974 Maverick Grabber
My first car was a '64 Fairlane 500 I was 16 years old. My first new car was a '74 Maverick Grabber ordered by me at 17 years old. It was red/black, 302 auto, bucket seats floor shift power steering, disc brakes, tinted glass, am/fm stereo. I owned it for 14 years. Should have never sold it! It was $4000 a-plan. I was the only kid in high school with a new car. It made me very popular. Not all kids were happy about it but I had a very good job after school and I kept my grades up so there were no prolbems at home. There is a red Maverick in the Movie "Dazed and Confused" That is what life was like (a little bit) even the time period (1976). I graduated in 1975. Except for a little drag racing, I never abused my car. It took everything I made to make the payments and pay the insurance. My folks paid nothing but some kids didn't believe it. In 1974 it took about $7.50 to fill it up from E. Life was good! P,S, My Dad did co-sign for the loan! U know what blew many guys away? In 1976 I bought a '69 LTD for everyday use and I put the Grabber in Grandmas garage to use for nice weather and weekends. I haven't changed much!

My parents had several vehicles that I would drive from time to time when I was 15. When I turned 17 they gave me the 73 Comet that they had gotten in 74. 302, floor shift, buckets and a Kraco radio/casette player. I had even installed an 8 track player in it when I was like 13. I had helped my dad change the flex plate when I was like 14-15. He later told me that that was when he had made up his mind to give me that car. When they did I put new ignition parts and u-joints, one was broken and the car was sitting. After driving it for a couple of weeks my dad took it back cause his 74 Chevy truck needed a clutch. When I left home soon after, I was on foot. I later paid for the car and got the title with it. I bought my son his 75 Comet and don't plan on taking it from him, but I also don't plan on fixin her up. That's for him to do and earn money for. I'm broke!

It was not the first vehicle I ever owned, but my '74 Grabber was the first car I owned that I legally drove on the road, and for all intents and purposes may as well be considered my first.
