How do you tell if it is reverse rotation? I asked for one for '93 5.0, and can't determine for sure if it is right. I don't want to find out AFTER I install it. Also, what is the recommended way to install the pump gasket? Are you supposed to use sealant of any kind, and if so, what kind?
I recently replaced a 160 -180 stat. I always use a sealer on this type of work. My housing had a rubber type O-Ring on the stat housing. I left the rubber there, cleaned arnd the rubber, put a stat gasket and sealer on -- no leaks so far. I've been out of the hobby for a while and used sealer back in the day. I still believe in it - until I discover something better. Someone here may have a better solution. Im not sure abt what sealer it is; I asked the guy at my independent auto supply and he gave me the right stuff. My independent store is close 5mins away and have parts listings for stuff AZ, AA and SOME other have no parts listings for. BTW -- I use sealer liberally "plenty of it". SBF stat housing not a easy thing to get at one fastner if u have big funky AC bracket in the way. Did'nt want to do it but once. THAT'S JUST MY THOUGHTS.
If it's a 93 model year pump, it's reverse rotation. The last year for the std rotation was in the 91 Crown Vic/Marquis. I guess the only sure way to tell is to compare it side by side with a known pump (std or rev)
Don't get carried away with the sealer. just enough to make up any minor differences in the two mating surfaces and hold the gasket to the pump(or timing cover) during install. don't want too much squeezing into the water passages.
Are all Reverse rotation pumps aluminum? This one is, and the regular rotation one I am taking is a monster chunk of cast iron.
No, not all rev.rot. are aluminum. And the std rotation pump was changed in mid 88 to an aluminum unit.(and there were other aluminum pumps in previous years, reaching all the way back to the mid 60's) That's the one I'm running on my 331. Externally it looks exactly like the same year's reverse rot. pump.
The good thing about the aluminum one is that it clears my balancer. The cast iron one had such large casting bumps on it that one just barely touched my balancer and scraped on it. I had to do a little grinding on it to keep it from rubbing.
