Went to haba frieght today to pickup another cheap spray gun and some compressor fitting!!!! Damn store almost empty!!! Everything i needed is gone! Guess i gotta go to other store tommorrow and buy the more expensive made in china stuff.
What cheap spray gun did you get...or going to get? I looked at them, and the good, better, best signs seemed.....um..well, they all looked the same! I dont want to buy professional grade stuff just to use it 5 times, but I sure would like it to work decent and be useful at least 5 times. I need a crash course on paint too....I watched a few you-tubes, but they are not helpful. I just want to know what paint will give good adhesion, dry hard, (tough), and wont turn to cheese from a little oil and whatnot. Need to paint my engine bay.
I have the $15 sprayer. Sprayer worked great in my opinion. My first job was engine compartment a few months ago (half assed done however). My 2nd job was my hood about a week ago. That turned out much much better because i took time to strip paint and smooth. In other word "Any paint will look great on a well prepped body" I wanted to upgrade to sprayer with regulator at sprayer for $29. I got a seperate regulator to screw onto sprayer so i,ll just used my 15.00 gun for whatever else i need. I leaned find paint system you gonna use and learn to read tech sheet. I was so stupid at this i had to youtube how to read mixing cup. The tech sheet give you mixing ratio. Tech sheet also recommends your sprayer noozle size so watch this as you,re buying your sprayer. $15 cheapo is 1.4. Most helpful have been that youtube guy "My friend Pete" and "autobody101" forum. I,m beginning to understand why painting cars are so expensive. Its the work done before the paint. And don't cheap out on safety. Eye protection and respirator mainly. Lean to read the MSDS on the stuff you buy. All paint is bad for our health! The newer paint today have that isocynate in it. Bad bad stuff for our bodies.
Stu Is engine in or out? The best paint will probally be the urethane from what i,ve been reading. I think the key will be how well the prep will be.
Painting anything is prep, prep, prep... I use Krylon spray cans for underhood repaint. No issues. Black in my Cobra engine compartment, yep Kryloned in '92. Yeeah it could be freshened but I like the "used" look. Front of block & water pump repainted a couple years ago.

If one is building a show car, probably want to use better than buzz bombs but for a driver, more than adequate. I strive for the factory look that was never perfect from day one. Notice Comet's shiny cowl, was clear coated "Performance Gold" when car was painted, everything else under hood is Old Equipment Yellow from Tractor Supply. Unless I point it out, no one is yet to notice.
Super clean and red scotch brite pads are great for getting any residual gunk as well as scuffing the surface for adhesion. After that I give it a thorough cleaning with wax and grease remover. The key is to have a clean rag after your last wipe down, if it's not clean the pain may not stay put. I'm in the middle of this on the bottom of the car right now, tedious but it's coming along. I'm using rustoluem paint bombs topped with their bed liner.
I'm running into the same issue at my local stores. I needed a set of 6 ton jack stands and all of the stores are out of them. Ended up paying the extra $$$ for the 12 ton.
Was in the Orland Park, Chicago area store this week; they had 6 tons sitting in front of store on the way out. That's what made me notice them.
I scrubbed everything with "Detro" clean, gonna do some light sanding too. I tested some rustoleum paint bombs on a spare timing cover, and the second coat ate up the first coat....and I could scratch it off with a fingernail. BLEH! It was the exact color I wanted, slightly bluer than light blue. I gave serious thought to latex paint used to paint metal roofs, but am afraid the headers will cook it off. Now I may just settle for black and use engine enamel. Probably overthinking everything. Has anyone used rustoleum enamel in an engine bay with good results? How did you apply it? second coat before 1st coat dries? One thick coat and let it dry for a month?(lol)
Someone did a horrible rattlecan over the blue, and much of it peeled off. I think some more prep and some more black....I just cant drop a freshly painted engine into something so ugly. I like the control a spraycan offers, as well as the paint mixing....shake for one minute! That Krylon you used looks fabulous. That black doesnt look lazy..... You took alot of stuff out of there, and masked off the cowl and fenders. My previous owner shot everything black, grease and all...lol.
