This combo is in the works for my Grabber. .060 overbored 302, heavily ported 289 heads with 1.94 and 1.6 valves, 292h competition cam with rhoads lifters, 1.73 roller rockers, performer rpm intake with holley 600 carb, 3000rpm converter. I should have project completed this spring and will post actual times. Hoping for a consevative time of low eight and with tuning, maybe dipping into the 7's.:D

Looks like a well-matched combo! 7's? No problemo!

After you win a few races, save some of the dough you won and get a set of aftermarket heads. You'll want to kiss yourself over and over first time you make a pass down the strip with the aftermarket stuff on there!

I hope to get this motor running well and then sell it to buy a set of aftermarket heads.(y) I have a complete 347 stroker kit with srp flat top pistons that would make to much compression with the heads I have now, 289.

Gettin low 8's or high 7's is gonna be dependent on the suspension and its ability to hook up. Your gonna find as many of us have when you get enough power to turn that kind of time that traction bars and drag radials aren't enough unless the motor is not producing anymore power than it takes to get that time.
I spend the first 100 ft.of a pass waitin to get full traction:( and the last 500 runnin like a bat out of hell.:)
Another concern is the weight of the car, I have to remember my setup is moving 3300 lbs down the track to keep it all in perspective.
    It's all relative.

It's all relative.[/QUOTE]Rick ,I wonder why your car weighs 3,300 lbs? Mine weighs 3090 with me in it(230 lbs) We both have 302`s with aluminum heads and a c-4 ...but I have a 9 inch rearend and 6 pt roll bar plus I have the tunnel ram and 2 carbs with the scoop (I mention this because if you pick up the whole assembly ,it is pretty heavy) I cant remember if you have A/C or not ,mine doesnt. And I know my Weld wheels are lighter than your Cragars but it still doesnt make sense why your car would weigh so much:confused:   ...any ideas?

Gent I think your car will do what you want it to do with that combo and good traction.(y)

Mike I shoulda said 3292 wet (1/2 a tank of gas), with me in it...I tip the scales at 300lbs, also have a 9" and a bench seat, there may be a difference in axle weight also versus a car...these come out of a 78' F-150 and are very heavy and have 11" drums. The SSM's added at least 10 lbs versus the cheapos I had on there so I think it's over 3300 now.

    Gent and scrapper,

are you guys running your stock pistons/rods/bearings? I have not made serious mods to my engine thinking the stock setup wouldn't handle the extra horses. Currently at 55,000 miles, 54,000 of them put on from home to church to Wal-Mart (or the '70s equivalent) by my wife's great-grandmother. Very little wear.

Do I need to rebuild with new parts, or can I get 350-500 HP out of my original stuff?
