Hello, I'm geting ready to buy a 1970 Maverick but I need to know if there were any changes in between 1970 and 72? I know that the 1969 1/2 is different (transmission tunel is smaller) I hope I can get the money together by tomorrow so I can pick it up. (could I put a 302 or a 289 in it?)
Well for one thing, the '70 has 4-lug hubs/axles, and for another thing, the '70 does not have staggered rear shocks. Yes...
The 69 1/2 and 70's had clear front turn signal lamp lenses, 71-72's had amber lenses. These are the lamps mounted below the bumper. You can swap a 289/302 in any Maverick
There is a lot of channel built into the stock 1970's floor to be able to mount both shocks in front of the rear. You would have to build something to the back of the rear to mount one of the shocks there. This is what the channel looks like without the shock brackets bolted to it.
If you intend on using some type of traction device such as Cal-Tracs or slapper bars, then there is no benefit to adding staggered shocks.
'70 also doesn't have the reinforced lower shock towers like the 71-up cars.Door sill plates are also 1 year only.To put in a v8 tranny crossmember you'll have to slot the mounting hole on 1 side & trim the crossmember a little to fit up in the narrower tunnel(not a big deal though).
No, the V-8 '72 cars were 5-lug. I think only some I-6 models were 4-lug. V-8 was never an option in '70...
thank you guys for the info. I have a 72 maverick and I'm thinking on geting the 1970 but I didn't know if I could put a 302 or a 289 in it. What about the 4 speed transmission (top loaded?) will it fit? or what about the T-5?
