I bought this Mav a couple of months ago and I am having a hard time deciding on what color this is. It looks like the Competition Orange from 1970 but I dont see the color in the decode pages. Unfortunately, I dont have the vin # with me as the car is at my dads. I have not seen this color on many mavericks. No, it is not faded red. The trunk is shiney new looking and it is definately orange and original. What color is this and why is it not listed?? Here is a picture of the car. Thanks. JP
It looks like Ford 2B, bright red. See my pics under my username for pics of my older original paint. It does look orange when faded. Seth
Nope, not red. It is a true orange..in fact BRIGHT orange. I will have to post a picture of the inside of trunk. It is grabber orange if I have ever seen it but I have never seen a paint code for grabber orange on the vin decoding sites. JP
more info Ok....got a little more info. The tag on the door says it is a 13 color. No 13 listed on the paint decodes for 1970?? Here is a better picture of the color.
Hope you can see it. Here is about the best shot I can get of the door tag. The closest I can get for 1970 is Vermilion Metallic #3.
Interesting ... Ford never had a Color Code 13 .... Ford 1970: 1 = Calypso Coral 3 = Vermillion Metallic DSO 71 is Los Angeles so it wasn't a special order ... Is it Metallic?
It doesnt appear to be metallic at all. Its a pretty color and I want to keep it the same but I dont know what it is?? It looks to be Calypso Coral and it has never been repainted.
I found this on the internet, looks like calypso coral was a color for 1970 and it appears that the code is #13 for the mavericks although they dont specify the code in the letter below. You asked the CAC to provide you with the original specifications and optional equipment for your vehicle. Your VIN number (0X91L338595) decodes as follows: 0 1970 Model year X St. Thomas Assembly Plant 91 Ford Maverick 2-door Hardtop Sedan L 250 CID 6-cyl IV Gasoline Engine 338595 Consectutive unit number This vehicle was produced 04/07/70, with the following options: Calypso Coral Exterior Paint Color Black Vinyl & Vinyl Bench Seats Automatic Transmission XP Type Conventional 3.08 Rear Axle D70 x 14 Fiberglass Belted Wide Oval White Side Wall Tires Manual Air Conditioning AM Radio Complete Tinted Glass Left-Hand Remote & Right Hand Racing Mirrord I Hope this info proves helpful, Sincerely, Steven Kim Research Unit Rep Customer Assistance Center
I looked at my paint chips compared to your color samples you posted...and it looks like Vermilion to me....which is a paint code of: 1 Vermilion had a Maverick name as well: Home On the Orange Looks like the "3" is a misprint added to the "1". One could get Grabber Orange in 1970...put only on a 1970 Grabber. Code: U By the Way..... Paint code: 3 That paint color is called Thanks Vermillion and was a 1969 1/2 color only.
Im still not convinced. 1. Not grabber orange....grabber orange has a lot more yellow in it. 2. Not red. Not even close. 3. Vermillion?? I have seen a couple of Vermillion cars and they have a lot more red in it than this does. This is orange... 4. I have seen many mustangs that are calypso coral...this is an exact match for that color. The pictures add a slight red tint to it. Does anyone out there have an original calypso coral maverick?? I would put money on it being coral but I could be wrong.
Pretty sure Calypso Coral and Competition Orange are identical colors .. just named differently for different model years.
nother pic here is a shot of the inside of the trunk. It is not faded and this seems to best show the actual color.
