I have a warm 302 from a 1994 mustang I swapped over to a 600 cfm carb. I use a stock mechanical pump. this is a street car and it works great! never have had a fuel delivery or psi problem.

You would only need a lift pump in the tank if you mount the external pump significantly higher than the level of fuel in the tank at empty. I made a bracket to mount the pump in front of the tank, level with the bottom of the tank. I used the stock feed line from the sender and plumbed a return line into the vent opening on the top of the tank. I have seen a couple of EFI installs that plumb the return line into the filler neck as well. If you use the existing vent line port for the return, make sure you have a vented gas cap.

there are lots of ways to accomplish the efi fuel pump and system.
    http://www.maverick.to/mmb/showthread.php?t=75382
that was one way to do it.
the key elements to properly doing an efi system are these.
fuel tank. stock one can be modified. you will want some sort of baffle around the pick up tube or intake pump to prevent the fuel from sloshing away from the pick up or you will want to put a sump on the tank.

prefilter: this is exactly what its name says. a filter that goes before the pump to make sure nothing gets into the pump and damages it. usually a 100 micron filter is used.

fuel pump: needs to be high pressure fuel injection type pump. can be an intank or an external pump. if its external it needs to be at or below the bottom of the tank. they dont suck fuel very well, just pump it well. as mentioned above an intank lift pump is an option.

fuel filter: this comes after the pump. must be a high pressure fuel injection filter. they are usually a 10 micron or finer filter.

fuel lines: all the fuel lines must be for fuel injection. the stock steel line is fine. the stock rubber is not fine. it would all need to be replaced with fuel injection hose. also the hose clamps need to be replaced with fuel injection hose clamps.

fuel rails. you should have those already. there are adapters that plug into the stock ford fuel fittings that allow you to hook a/n style hoses to or the rubber efi hose on.

a fuel pressure regulator. there should be a stock one on the fuel rails. you dont need to do anything with it.

the fuel return line. this line does not need to be high pressure. it simply returns the unused fuel to the tank. some people will use the vent line that goes from the tank to the charcoal canister as there return. if you do this you need modify the fitting on the tank, and use a vented fuel cap.

thats the basics of the fuel system for an efi motor.
