I am wanting to put a different center section in my rear in the 73 Grabber. I was wondering what exactly is the difference in a true posi rear, a Trac Lok rear and some of the other options out there like a mini spool, What I want is for both wheels to pull when I am running the car hard. Like doing a burnout or racing at the local track this spring/summer Which is better and which will be easier to swap back to the original if I went with say 3.55 gears and wanted to be able to swap back to my open differential once the track closes and I want to drive the Maverick back and forth to work and get my Gas mileage back. Or would the option of going with a posi or limited slip 3.00 or maybe a 3.08 rear give me the best of both worlds and I wouldn't have to swap back and forth. Would a limited slip rear give me both wheels pulling in a burnout situation at the track before runnign the 1/4 mile? What do you guys think?? All opinions welcome and greatly appreciated
a spool locks both axles together 100% of the time. its cheap to do but from what i hear sucks for a daily driver, going around turns stuff like that. anything but straight lines. i thought posi and trac-loc were two names for the same thing, a limited slip rear. and yea thats whats going to leave two long black marks when you peel out instead of an open rear which just leaves the one, usually on the passenger side
they are both, basically, the same thing. both are good on the street. no need to change them out. however, they are not great at the track, in my opinion. not saying they won't work, but they will not take a lot of abuse. a mini spool or a full spool actually locks the axles so they both rotate the same all the time. therein lies the problem with these types of rears. driven on the street, when going around the corner one tire travels a shorter distance than the other. so the inside tire will be sliding part of the time. this will wear the tires faster and also cause you to lose traction in the rain, unless you are very careful or leave the car in the garage during bad weather.
The full spool replaces the entire carrier (the ring gear bolts to it). The mini-spool just replaces the spider gears, and you have to take the carrier apart to install it. Mini-spools are probably (saying this only because I am not an expert) not as strong, and are generally advertised as "dirt-track" use only. That said, I know a large handful of people use them at the drag strip with no issues. Also, with an 8" your only option for a spool is a mini-spool (unless somebody decided to market one since the last time I looked).
We use mini spools in circle track racing. They mount in the middle of your stock carrier and replace all of your spider gears. They are held in place by the cross shaft and both splined axle ends slide into either end of the mini spool. I believe the full spool replaces the entire carrier. Edit: Grabber5.0 beat me to the answer while I was typing too s l o w.
Our 9 inch mini spools are used on a 1/3rd mile paved track with all 10" slicks mounted on the car with no trouble at all. Since 1989 we never broke one. I don't know about the drags though.
When you say they are both basically the same you are talking about What? I always thought Traction Lok was a Ford version of a limited Slip rear is that true? Is the option there to put limited slip Gears in a Maverick with and 8 inch rear? My understanding of limited slip is that it basically acts as an open diferential under normal driving conditions and if one wheel slips more than a certain amount then both wheels start pulling and essential act as a posi traction once one wheel slips. Is that true??
i dunno if there is a such thing as a true posi rear and just a regular posi... posi will pull both wheels and still slip to differentiate the wheels speeds. Posi will slip sometimes. They have already talked about full and mini spools, so....no need to. You can also get a detroit locker which is like having a full spool but can still ratchet out to "slip" like a posi, using different techniques of course. spools are generally not recommended for street use. it goes either way on this board... some use it, some don't. it's cheap, but can cost you later. tires, axles...etc... possibly. detroit locker is the best way to go if you want a "true posi" in your words. a trac loc will work great for street use...a great all around unit. posi trac is a limited...key word, LIMITED...so it still slips...they do not "LOCK" together..those are called "lockers"...limited slips allow both wheels to turn with the use of clutches...these clutches slip and wear out eventually..so going around corners, these clutches slip, but still give power to both wheels..allowing you to turn properly. . Posi is General Motor's term for their limited slip differentials. Ford calls theirs Trac-Lok and Chrysler is Sure-grip. The function of all three is the same. They use a system of clutches in the third member to apply the same amount of power to both rear wheels, but will still slip enough to allow the differential to work. it's bunched together.... i kept thinking... hahaha This thread should shine some light to the 8's with LSD. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=6844
Call Continental Competition in Uniontown, Bud's his name! He'll fix you up with what you want! Best rearend in town! Tell him Dave Stuckey sent ya 724-439-4189
alrighty then. I think I have a handle on it now. When I was using the term TRUE Positive traction I was refering to a rear that was designed to put power to both wheels under hard take off/wheel spinning and not a rear in which the spider gears are welded together. I also thought that a true Posi rear was 100% all the time power to both wheels but I guess that is a Locker when it is "Locked In" But none the less I got the concept in my grasp now. I guess the next step will be to talk to my Bro-in-Law and get me a center section with a decent gear ratio that isn't gunna kill my street MPG but will give me a little better than the factory 2.79 open diff. that is in it. Maybe I will just go with a limited slip 3.00 and call it a day
alot of manual pintos and Mustang II will have a 8'' trac loc center section that will seap into your axle 100% to both wheels all the time is what spools do too
DETROIT LOCKER is the ONLY TRUE Streetable Automatic POSTIVE TRACTION unit available. It will unlock when needed and will lock when needed. Its the only true locker there is. If you want both wheels to have equal power and you have the power, Detroit Locker is the only way to go.
