I got a Sears Dashmate AF/FM 8-Track Stereo out of about a '76 Maverick. It fits in the bezel and looks like it belongs in the car. Is there any way to know what ohm speakers it should use?

I'm guessing it was sold not long after 1976 -- found a similar stereo on Craigslist by doing a Google search but it was a 1979 model and and was cassette rather than 8-track. Thinking that dates my stereo pretty close. Was the 8 ohm speaker dominant back then?

Im almost sure 8 ohm's were the norm back then.

Since power = (volts/Resistance)xVolts the lower the speaker ohms, the more power your amp uses. So you have less risk using 8ohms in an unknown situation.

Yes, I was guessing 8 ohms too. Looking on the web, I'm not finding 8 ohms. And the speakers I'm finding are rated for megawatts. ;) If a speaker will handle a lot of power does that mean it TAKES a lot of power to get any sound out of it? This stereo probably has about 8 watts per channel. Anyone know where to buy speakers that will work well with this old stereo? Don't want to spend a lot on speakers for my $20 stereo.

Didn't notice before that the bezel had been trimmed. :yup:

Most speakers now are 4 ohm impedance. Probably hard to find some new 8's this day and age. It's like trying to find a new CRT television in the age of flat screens. If u find some the cones are probably dry rotted. U probably will wind up w/ some 4ohms. What size are you wanting. I have 6*9's in my rear deck.

Not to mention finding that kickass black metal mesh grill speaker cover I was sporting back in "the day". :yahoo:

Just about ANY modern speaker will sound OK with that radio.

That's good to know. Thought the speakers had to be impedence matched with the amplifier.

I would be very careful with the volume knob if you use 4 ohm speakers. Being that old and more than likely designed for 8 ohm speakers if you push it too hard the smoke will roll!

The friend I bought the Maverick from had some nice, old 8-ohm 6X9 speakers that I got from him.

As it turned out, the AM/FM/8-track from the junked Maverick only put out about half volume on one channel. At first I thought it was just the mis-matched speakers I was testing it with but it was the same on the matched, 8-ohm speakers.

So, I also relieved him of an AM/FM/Cassette Stereo he had squirreled away. Finished installing it and rear speakers today and it works fine. Sounds much better than the original mono radio and dashboard speaker. And, I actually have some old cassette tapes I enjoy buy haven't heard in years. Hmm, ... wonder if the tape drive works?? Guess I'll go try it.

Put two 4 ohm speakers in series for each channel.
