What years AOD transmission are okay to use in the Maverick swap. A guy who lives down the street from me is changing out a tranny on a 86 lincoln. It's an AOD and he says i can have it. Needs a rebuild but the price is right. FREE. Is that a good one to use?
..sounds like a good year , i don't know when they went to the AOD-E....mine is an...'84 F150... ...are you putting this behind a ...roller motor? ...Frank...(ILMAOD)
for the right price pricey! AOD i believe were used up until 93ish somewhere in 94 the aode/4r70w came into play
This will be going behind an 87 roller motor that is going to go in my sprint if I ever get around to it>
I believe that through 86 or 87 the AOD still used the thin OD band and cast clutch drum - the two weak points in it. You can probably get the thicker band and stam0ped steel drum from Broader or Summit. That will give you a 2" OD band and the ability to put more clutches in the drum. If you use the TransGo AOD-HP valve body kit in it you will get a replacement for the accumulator and other parts in the valve body that are weak too. Paul
Don, As long as it is for a stock engine, in a light car, and you aren't going to drive it like it is a four speed competition machine the transmission will work well. If you add a TransGo shift kit in the valve body (about $100) you will love the transmission. If you replace the drum and band with the larger capacity units from the newer trannies then you have a performance tranny that will stand up to a well built street 302. The AOD family of transmissions are capable of handling up to 400 HP using stock parts and a good valve body kit. It takes after-market parts to withstand 600 HP. It is a more expensive transmission to build than the C4 for that reason. Since you can get it for free then the $600 you will have to put into it for the buildup makes it a reasonable alternative. If you have to pay someone to build it you might find it cheaper to go with a C4. You can get a Broader C4 for about a third of the cost of a Broader AOD of the same HP range.
...with all that being said...my +/- 400 HP motor with this .... $150 installed...Transmission - 1984 - f150 - AOD (used...as in no rebuild) V/body - Lentech - Street Terminator- 1.2.3/4shift pattern...O/D delete has been hammered to hell and back..(broken 2 drive shafts) but no problems with transmission or (overdrive) "I Love My AOD" ...or have i already mentioned that Frank...:Handshake
I think you use the 4r70w drum and band or basicly replace all the aod stuff from the center support out with 4r70w stuff and use a hardened stub shaft to update the internals. With that and a lentec valvebody i think it a stout trans. Real stout!
71Gold, exactly as I said - up to 400HP with stock parts and a good valve body kit, although you replaced the valve body with one from Lentech, the AOD can live happily. How much did that valve body cost you? Around this part of the country $150 doesn't cover the removal and installation of a transmission. You got a great deal with $150 laid out for the transmission and installation. Around here they want between $1200 and $2000 to R&I with a "good" used or rebuilt AOD. Greasemonkey, That is exactly what it takes to make the AOD a great tranny. I might add that to make them able to handle 600 HP you have to go with the one piece input shaft and a non-locking converter. The reason they are so expensive is all the hard parts that need to be replaced.
Don Get the trans I have 2 of them 1 in my mav and 1 in my 56 f100 both are out of town cars 1 86 and 1 87 . The town car trans have a longer tail shaft than a mustang . jay
