I have a 3G alternator. I need to know what year and model this alternator came off of. When I bought it I had to grind down the top to make it fit into the bracketry I have for my serpentine setup.

    isnt that the mo model?
the brackets are for fox mustang. i would look on a site like the corral.net for a 3g conversion and they should have the correct application that you should ask for.

I got my old one from a 93 Taurus 3.8L
It looks the same. I sold it, so unfortunately I cant cross reference the number for you.
When I was doing the 3G swap the "how to" I used said to get one that had the mounting bolts 180 degrees away from each other, and the 2 holes in between the ribs is the way to identify them.
Also to get it from 3.8L V6 because its basically a 5.0 with two cylinders chopped off.

Looks like the MotorCraft F4SU-10300, or F4ZU-10300 model. Alot of these were used on the mid to late 90's Mustangs, Thunderbirds, and Cougars.

It's normal to have to grind the bracket down on that model, to fit older fords.

You can see your 3G (3-wire) mount type, and compare other 3G's on this chart:
(search F4SU, on Thunderbirds, to see yours, or F4ZU, which was the Mustang ones)

(the earlier link I posted was bad, and updated with more of the part number and pics with similar bracketing)

dang it, wrong alternator! It seems that the top ear is too short and doesn't reach the top bolt hole of the bracket. And it's not threaded either.

If my guess of your exact Alternator led you to get the wrong one, I apologize Mashori.

There's a ton of different 3G alternator styles and brackets. I was doing the best I could with your pictures, and without knowing your existing part.

    Ryan's looks alot closer.

I think he went with my recommendation, since it looks like the alternator I had. The guy I sold it to used it on a foxbody with a serpentine belt, So I thought it was compatible with that setup as well.

If you did go with mine I apologize as well.

I think Mo is using a truck/van seerpentine belt setup. Which is why his alternator has the longer mounting ears.

Ok so I went and bought the 3.8 liter 1990 taurus one, it looks almost identical to my old one. It should work. Gonna stop by the shop after work tonight and grind the top down and see if it works.

Can I just change the casing or is that hard to do?

It can be hard to do becuae the brushes are spring loaded and get in the way. I would just grind the new one to fit the bracket like the old one did. Would be quicker than changing the guts. Im sure an angle grinder will take it down real quick.

When you get your correct one in Mashori...take some more pics...and tell up how the voltages are all doing on your setup. It should be pretty easy after this new Alternaor, to get the rest of your electrical bugs out.
