where the heaters hoses go??

    Vehicle:
    1971 Mercury Comet GT , - 2003 Mercury Marauder...
    looking at the fire wall of a 71 Mercury Comet gt , no AC ,the lower hole for the heater hoses goes to the back of the intake , why the upper hole or hose goes all the way up to the water pump??:hmmm: please help.. thanks for your time!!!
