This is 5.0 with rear sump pump. Currently running 7 qts oil, but no dipstick to keep tabs on it. If I purchased a stock Ford 5.0 dipstick and tube, would it go into the BLUE hole in the block, or one of the SILVER ones? Was stock location in the block or in the pan? Secondly, could I use the original front sump dipstick on this? I am not sure how much of the oil ends up in the front and if it would be an accurate measuring location.
The stock dipstick goes in the block, it looks like some one put a pipe plug in the block there so the hole will probably be too big for the dipstick there now..... You can get one from Canton that will work in the pan..... Do not use the one in the timing cover, you would only be reading the level in the front oil pump sump..... The oil in the rear sump where the oil pick-up is could go low and the front would still read the same.....
5.0 stock location was in the block...(rear) early Mav/Comet 302 front sump pan...in the timing cover...(front) you may need to ask the...pan company what stick and tube to use?
The pan came with a tube and stick from canton, but it went into one of the silver holes in the pan. It came straight, tried to bend it so that it would steer clear of exhaust components, but anything over a slight bend would make the stick not move in and out of the tube. Then when I called them, they informed me that the stick would then have to be calibrated once I got it installed so that I would know where 7qts was. The lines on the stick were worthless. I chunked it and decided to go with a stock one from a 5.0. I figured as much about the front hole... By the looks of this picture, do you thing the stock 5.0 tube would clear all my headers and steering stuff? Or at least be bendable to make it clear and the stick still slide in and out? I can get them on ebay for a dime a dozen.
If the stock one fits, it would still dip the same amount into the pan as the original one. The pan is larger just to hold more oil in the bottom, but the top level of the oil, where the dipstick measures, would remain the same. Assuming I didn't have to bend the tube so much that the stick does not protrude out the bottom as far as it should. I guess I can just buy one and see if it clears my stuff. Only $30 or so off ebay, and I have wasted way more money on other experiments.
Is this a fox body double hump style pan.. or just a single rear sump? Unless you have a full length/race chassis style pan.. the stick ALWAYS goes to the oil pickups end of the pan. Only possible way to get an accurate reading. PS. you may consider mod'ing a Lokar or universal braided type deal. Nearly any length can be had to put it where YOU want it. They get hotter than hell.. but I usually just tab them off the header flange somewhere along the way.
If I remember right, I got a block that had a plug put in where the dipstick would have went. Only the top ½" of the hole was actually threaded, so you should be able to remove the plug and still use the factory tube and dipstick. I'd just remove the plug in the block and see if yours is still able to accept the original tube. Also, if the tube will fit, stick a dipstick down the hole to make sure there is no baffle it will hit, before you put the tube in. It would save you some hassles.
Does the pan have a windage tray or horizontal baffles? If it has either, a stock stick will not work unless you make a hole in the trays to get it thru. Most aftermarket sticks read wrong and need calibrated. I would modify a Lokar to fit in the pan hole, not the block if you have a windage tray. SPark
How are you planning on fitting the pan in your Maverick ? Never mind the dipstick, the pan isn't going to fit unless you've changed the front suspension to accommodate the rear sump pan.
