It's a mystery to what the purpose of the grommet is but it is not to keep water out .. water easily comes in through the fresh air vents all along the cowl ... Also .. the rubber grommet is only on the driver side Wiper arm ... not on the passenger side. I suppose only one of the original Ford engineers could actually tell us what the purpose of it was ... They are not reproduced ... got to pull one off a junker if you want to replace it ..

there are also "weep holes" at the base of the windshield under the trim.... if the hood to cowl "seal" is missing, water can get in there also...frank...

It's called a thingamagig. That's what you call any odd part the engineers at Ford came up with that has no known name.:) Dohicky works too.

I could almost see it acting like a spacer for when they lined the cowls up to be tacked down. Since the wiper arm stubs pretty much center the cowl. But that's a shot in the dark?

FYI ... Ford official name for the part is: Windshield Wiper Pivot Shaft Grommet - Part # D0DZ-17C582-A - parts list shows 1 per car. If anyone wants to make one here are the dimensions: 29/32" I.D. x 1" long.

I thought the grommet was only used on the driver's side wiper because it's located directly over the "chimney" that feeds the air ducts. The wiper arm on the passenger side is located more towards the center of the cowl.

That works for me. (y) Plus they probably save $.03 per car by not putting one on the passenger side.

So since they built over 2 1/2 million Mavs and Comets they saved over $75,000. I be pi$$ed if I was a grommet saleman and Ford was my account.
