This spring after some baseline runs I will be in the market for a cam. I currently have an old PAW SSI hyd cam. Im thinking of going mech flat tappet and looking for input on a cam guy. Is it wishful thinking to pick up at least 2 tenths with the swap. Maybe the cam I have is close enough for the combo. These things I will ask. Names like Jay Allen,Ed Curtis,Bullet,Crower and others come to mind but wanted to see what you guys have used. Coop
Jay Allen would be the first choice but he is down and out at the moment with an illness and will be so back logged if he gets back to work. In reading the camshaft forum on sbf tech site Bullet and Crower comes up quite a bit as well as a few others. I would think that picking up 2 tenths with a cam built for your engine is totally possible. Just my opinion
I just noticed that today. He would have been my first choice but Ill move on sense he is down and out. He rubbed me the wrong way on one of my posts on there about a dyno sheet of my car, but he was totally correct my converter was shot and engine was in run away on the dyno, manipulating the graph making power at 7,100rpm with a hyd cam. I of course didnt know that untill the converter was cut open a few weeks ago. Lesson learned on that
Give Jon a call at Delta cams, great customer service. I ran one of their cams last year in a Honda project. He does a lot of Fords also. http://www.deltacam.com Oh and i forgot to add that He has probably the lowest prices for custom cams.
I wanted a Jay Allen cam also ,but due to Jays illness I got one (Billet core Hydrolic Roller with PAC springs) from Ed Curtis at Flowtech Induction. Ed has been doing this for over Thirty years. I have not put the 347 together yet, but as soon as I do, I plan to post the results of the build.
JAY Allen and Ed Curtis should probably not be said in the same sentence at least not according the the sbf tech guys, they are a loyal group thats for sure. But in my research he would probably be my second choice as well. Looking forward to hearing about your build Mike, if it runs anything like my street version 347 you will be ecstatic. Also looking forward as to cam choice for your car Killercomet and to see if you pick up the desired 2 tenths
scott at cam research in colorado has done a few for me that worked great. He is a ford man and participates in the engine master challenge
I had a One Hour and thirty minute phone conversation with Jay Allen once. He is alot nicer on the phone than he is on the Forums. He called me that night to straighten out an internet "Mis-understanding" we had...and yes he can be a major "Richard Cranium" However...he is THE most knowledgeable Guy I have EVER come in contact with when it comes to Engines and camshafts. I have to give him credit for that. I cant wait to hear what this Ed Curtis cam is gonna sound like at Idle and of course I cant wait to drive the car with this new combo in it.
My buddy Bill Perk ran Eds cams in his mustang when it was a true street car. I may ask him or Charlie Booze what they think.
We have a Delta cams grinder in Tacoma - close and reasonable. It would be a ways to come from WV though.
Delta cams is in Tacoma, they ship pretty fast(free shirt and decals are nice too). They will also videotape the grinding of your cam if you want. Jon actually offered me to become a Online Vendor for their cams but with my other job I dont have the time.
Talk to John or Kirk at Bullet Racing Cams(Mississippi) or try Keith at Cam Motion(Louisiana). These two companies are KNOWN around here for making awesome power in a Ford motor. You will not go wrong with either one, Guaranteed!
The guy that designed the CNC program for my cylinder heads spec'd my camshaft based on cylinder head flow and other things. His name is Ron Sharp and he works for Roush Competition Engines. Jay Allen would be my choice when/if I change it.
