I'm installing a C4 from a 66 C4. There is but one lever on the side of the tranny and it points up. Thus, the reverse neutral switch on this tranny installs on the bottom. Here is the catch. I'm installing it on my 71 Comet GT with a 5.0. From the factory, the 71 Comet had it's switch on top. I cannot get good clarification on this from anyone. Is this switch on a 71 Comet different than the one on a 66 Mustang (on the inside), especially since they install differently? Or, are they the same and it does not matter? Oh yes, the plug on my car is one plug with four connections, two male and two female. I need to buy a switch but don't know which one to buy.... off to church... thanks!
Sorry Rev Ron I dont know the answer to your question, you have asked for answers for your problems but never told us the results. We are hear to learn from experiences and we gave you some possible cures for your transmission scraping noise or your shifter problem but get no feedback if they helped or what you did to cure them so no one has learned anything. So do a Google search and find your answer it is out there.
I mounted mine on top. I originally had a 3 speed manual, but installed a C4 & floor shift. I designed & fabricated a shift rod for the narrow "tunnel" of the 1970. I attached a picture of the reverse safety switch (also controls the back-up lights). I removed the RSS from the bottom of my steering column, and re-wired to the new one. Notice the "double-sided" shift lever. Cost me an arm & leg. On the Grabbers - the bottom went to a linkage to the steering column pointer.
You cant use a standard columb shift for a c4 tranny. You need a floor shifter or steering columb from an automatic.
Schroensr: I'm not sure what post/reply you are referring to...? I obviously disconnected all the linkage from the manual shift & removed the shift arm from the steering column. I fabricated a sleeve that covers the opening that the column shift lever went through. I'm using a 1970 Mustang floor shift.
If one was from the 66 c4 out of a mustang in the up right position , your 71 is down position. The lever is reversed. Let me see if I can find a diagram on the c4 for you. Your steering column has the ignition switch on it, so if you dont have the column in park. You wont be able to start the car. The switch stops that from happening.
Ok, here are the final facts. Ford did whatever it wanted to do in those days. My C4, from a 66 Stang, has the shifter lever in the up position. Thus, the reverse neutral switch is installed on the bottom. I understand that in 67 and on, things changed. The switches are different! If you get the wrong one, it will work just the opposite. I found this out! If I had installed a 71 C4 that would've come from the factory, the lever would be down.
