It is wider, about 3" flange to flange wider - the spring perches are 43" on center for the Mustang rear, which will fit the Maverick.

You can run a wider axle but will need to compensate for the lack of room by running skinnier tires and rims. Skinny tires mean less traction. This defeats the whole purpose of wanting a 9" so you can put more HP's to the rear wheels.

Someplace on the board I've posted a list of axles sizes from donor cars. Do a search for that and it will have sizes listed for other cars to look for.

If you get the wider 9 rearend than you have to get the rear rims with more backspacing. That way you still have nice size rear tires. If not, than the wider rearend will push the tires you have now outward about 1 to 1.5 inches per side.

I had a 69 mustang rear in my 71 comet for years .Iliked the wider stance in the back .Just have to watch wheel width and back spacing.

Yup, you guys are right, the spring perches are 43" on a Mustang. Sorry bout that. :tiphat:

I know I've moved them before, maybe I'm thinking of a Bronco 9" or something else I've worked on.

    Maybe you were thinking Ranchero?
They are weird on the pad spacing compared to the car that they came from.
While the Falcon, and later the Fairlane/Torino had one spacing, the Rancheros always had a narrow spacing.

On the 70 Stang rear you just need much more backspacing on the rims to get a decent tire size under there. The Mav will still hold the same tire as before, you just need to pay attention to the rim specs.
However, it has to be noted that if you need a 4" backspace now, you will need a 5.5" backspace after the swap. This is an uncommon backspace for most rims.
It could be a good thing though if you want to use modern rims.
The late model stuff has the backspace in this range.

I am hoping to runs similar to dan's or radmav's rim..... so this will fit our perches without modification
