Learned a painful lesson at the race track the other day...parked the car facing into the wind and left it alone for a few minutes. When I returned, the hood was down but the prop rod was on the outside!!....OUCH!!! Does anyone have a remedy for this fool? (other than parking downwind that is)
I had the same problem. Made a new rod that is shorter and removable. I use it at shows. Hooks into the radiator support and has a longer hook on the hood end.
Has almost happen to me. I was at a show and it was really windy and I seen it kinda lift once. I stood there and watched it and it did it again and the rod fell -- lucky I was standing there to catch it. It felt kinda red neck but there was another Maverick there and to get thru the show that day we had to tie twine between the radiator support and the hood latch while the hood was up with the rod in place to keep the hoods from lifting off the prop rod
Oh man, I would hate to come back and see the prop rod out over the driver fender and the hood on top. It sounds like a few different things to do. I take it you hook it in the hood first Barry and then into the rad support? I think a nice small piece of stainless wire to go from the hood latch to the hood latch bar that it latches to. To hold the slack during windy car show days only would be understandable to lookers at the SHOw.
I drilled two holes(3/8) in the hood hinges at the height I wanted my hood to sit. I use it at shows at times...but it might be an idea in the wind also. When I have them in I just put the nuts on a few turns. Just don't forget they are there when you want to close the hood....bad things just might happen!
You could create a wedge to insert into the prop rod hole after the prop rod is inserted to prevent it from coming out
Probably the easiest thing to do would be to open the hood & set it on the rod. Then drill a hole through one of the hing arms and through the hinge hood plate. Then you could hand tighten a bolt through the hole and the hood shouldn't lift enough to drop the rod.
