Burrrr, temp in 30's at night, geese overhead heading further south, and two more point races left. Have loaded up for the big two day shootout this weekend, lot's of visitors and a chili cookoff tomorrow night, with fun and games. going up today and get the cars ready. Also going to start preparing a Texas style chili with corn bread on the side. See how it will fare against the others for the winning receioe. Bad day last Sunday, had two red lights and out of the top ten. Mavman did not go any rounds either but is still in sixth place. Maybe can gain some ground, thes last two races. #1 in our class (Pro/No/E) is kicking some serious butt, with his windsor powered Maverick. Has always been a contender but never quite got the top spot. Pretty much got it locked up this time, and is well deserving of it. Same fellow that had a serious motorcycle accident, last summer. Refused to let it sideline him and made a determined recovery. Will post a picture of him and the Mav when the awards are given on the 18th. Several other gamblers races scheduled after that, but I am going to pass on them, and get the 347 installed in the Mont. Bought a JW bell and flexplate from a guy last week, and Mavman is preparing a glide for me to use behind the 347. Don't know if I will like it, but will be a challenge to sort out the setup, just like the Alky toilet injection was on the 331. Very frustrating but well worth it in the long run.
I may head up there this weekend, Im not sure. I hope you like the glide combo... I was going to work on my car today, but its just to damn cold for that crap right now. Course would help if I unpacked my stuff from the garage and got rid of some stuff. Anyways, have fun this weekend if I dont make it up there. Im sure you've proboally already left for the track for today, so maybe I'll catch you 2morrow.
Well, the season has ended for me. The trusty 331 gave up her internals on the first timetrial. Left ok, and thru the gears, then at 7000 she began to vibrate and slow up. Pulled to the side and exited the seat. Smoke and oil from the engine bay, large softball hole in block, just below the #1 cylinder. Will drive the rentastang today in quest of a top ten spot again and some of the big purse being paid. May the 331 RIP, she has served me well for two years. More later.
Damn dave that sucks. If you need any help getting your new motor in let me know. Good luck in the rentastang... I know its not the fairmont but give it hell
As a footnote, Mavman had to work yesterday and could not make the program. They ran Pro/NOE, street combo until the finals, then winner in Pro vs Super Pro winner. 2500 to win that one. After all races were run, those who had won a class final all season, were matched to a race of Champions, with the winner having bragging rights and 200.00(no entry fee). Mavman got to the track late but in time to race in it, with the Mighty Maverick. All races were run on 1/8th mile instead of normal 1000ft. First draw was the winner of the combo race. He dialed a .604 in his Camaro, Todd dialed a .602. On the brakes he runs a .604 and takes out the Cheby. Next round dials .603 and with some tire spin off the line, loses the race. .600 was in the old Mav if it had to be used, if you know what I mean.
(i assume you mean 6.00) and I can't imagine what you mean by "if it had to be used". :coughsandbaggercough: That's hauling it!
Crap, put that little dot thingy in the wrong place. Too early in the AM, also the Camaro dialed a 5.98, not 6.04. Still got his a** hsnded to him. Got rained out today, so got the Mont home and will perform surgery on the 331. Will let you know what gave up inside, for got I had "I" beam Eagle rod's in this motor. Always used "H" beams before, but the rotating kit from Eagle came with these(trying to save a buck, cost me in the long run). By the way, what is sandbagging?? AA-choo, cough, cough, seems I have caught something from Rick.
Figured I'd add my $.02 The Maverick was on a a run when I went out. Had a -.003 red in semis but ran the car about halfway down the track. 60' was 1.28. 330 was 3.79. Car next to me dialed 5.96 ran 5.94...and had the exact same 330' and 60'. Maverick would have gone 5.95 as I'm normally about .01 slower than that particular car. I saw his win light on and let off...should have stayed in to see what it'd run. Oh well...there's always next week. I was running 116 in the 1/8 last weekend with the new converter...went 116.92 last night in the first round with a crappy 1.33 60'. I'm happy with it....for now. As for the rent-a-racer, I believe that running 1/8 would suck big time. Right between 500' and the 1000' finish is where that car comes on STRONG. Fun to drive it like that....I absolutely love running a car that runs about the same, even a little faster. Last year I ran the stang in the ROC (race of champs 2005) and drew a guy that dialed 8.92. I had dialed a 8.99 and had been running 9.00 all day long. We left, he got a jump on me, but right past the 1/8 mile I drove right on by him and took the stripe with room to spare...9.00 on a 8.99 just like it'd been doing all day. Went red next round. That car pulls extremely hard on the top..makes it extremely hard for another car to judge the stripe. I cant count how many times other drivers have lifted and let it on by....even cars that are .4-.5 faster. Fun car! I guess it'd be more fun if it were geared for 1/8 only rather than 1000'.
Mavman is right, that is one fun little car to drive. For a 84, with concreted 302, KB pistons, RPM heads and intake, with a Holley 750 and MSD. 9in with 35 spline Moser's and MT's 28x9's. 4.86 gear. The Lunati cam is what makes it so fun, flat tappit solid 540 lift and can't tell you the LC's right off. Has an X pipe off the collectors, with IMCA type "so called" mufflers. Will give you a headache inside when she approaches 6800rpm, that seat of the pants power band that kicks in, is pretty close to a NOS shot. Not extremely fast but definately a blast to drive, win or lose. I guess I will find out next week since the trustly ride of mine is sickly. Anyone around our area in the next few week's, with some track time, is more than welcome to have a go with it. Is a bit of a demon to learn to drive at first because of it's "leap" out of the normal rpm powerband, at about the 1/8th mile thru 1000ft. Wonder what a roller cam of the same spec's would do. H'mm, another project.
Jr always had a blast in that car. I've never drove or riden in it (would love to sometime), but I sure had a blast riding in that Fairmount right after you got the 331 on it. Hope you give it hell next week and get back in the points. Find out what happened to the 331 yet?
Nope. Probably be a while...but stay tuned, there will be pictures for sure. Mustang...when it gets up to, say, around 6200 RPM, its like spooling a turbo but at low boost...it starts pulling harder. I dont know why it does it but its' fun as heck. I peeked into the inspection window of the 331 earlier. Both rod big ends are still on the crank so it most likely broke one of them (probably #5 by the looks of it) and whatever else happened. If I had to make a prediction...crank salvageable, oil pump junk, 2 bent valves, probably got 2 pistons, block, pan, and whatever else. Just a prediction, but it could have been much worse (like mine usually are....)
IF the crank is saveable thats a big plus... ANd your right... your motors usually totoally let go and cant save much. lol Your lucky to even save heads. lmao
Thought the crank was ok until I removed the #3 thrust bearing. Something has held the crank foward and wore a 1/16 groove in the thrust face. the bearing itself, is fine on the foward side but only about 1/32nd thick on the rear. All bearing surface's are great, the journals are also like new. Can get the crank welded, etc. but the cost from Eagle for a new one is about the same. Also nicked the lobe on #1 exh. on the cam. Here are a few pic's.
