would it be a good thing if...parts wanted/parts for sale ...threads fell off after 90 days? this way the thread wouldn't be posted in 2-3 years later and save band width.
if this is done, will the thread starter loose that...post count?

the "bitching" (not as in cool) thread brought this to mind...:yup:

    Frank...:chirp:

Frank, when it is cool, it is "Bitchen".

    Good idea though.

And actually, I don't think For sale threads should count toward the post count anyway. Too many people join the forum, post their car or parts for sale, then never post again. Why give them a post count at all for doing that?

They don't have to be deleted. If they get locked after 90 days they won't get posted in again a year later, but nothing will change with post totals or anything.

It might help if the start dates showed on the list of threads. I usually view the list of new posts, go directly to the latest post for a thread and often don't see the date the thread was started.

what would be the point in...locking...the thread?
90 days after the last post in a... for sale/parts wanted thread ...it's pretty much done anyway.
:hmmm:...would deleting them restore band width?

You are right, Frank, on the spelling.

I don't know about you guys but I try to delete my for sale posts after I sell my item.

I may not do it 100% of the time, but I try.

For sale section doesnt add a post to your post count anyways.. Seems like a good idea if you cant sell your part in 90 days you know something is wrong..

Locking them would give me a chance to go back and see what items were selling and there price range. Its a win-win for sure(y)

That's not what bandwidth is. Threads take up storage space on the server, but it is such an insignificant amount of space deleting them would be virtually useless. The pictures take up a good bit of space, but non-donor accounts are limited to the number of pictures they can have, so they get deleted eventually anyway. Locking the threads would prevent them from being posted in and being moved to the top of the "New Posts" queue which is what most people are annoyed with. It should be able to be automated with a script on the server so it doesn't take up anyone's time. The threads would still be there for other people to reference if needed, which can be useful for finding out what something's value is.

EDIT: Bandwidth metaphor... as close as I can fit it.

Gas is the content of the webpage. (forum posts, pictures, articles, etc.)
Engine C.I.D. is the number of people viewing the content.
Carburetor C.F.M. is the available bandwidth of the site's connection.
M.P.G. is the amount of bandwidth you actually use.

The more people you have viewing the site, the larger the engine's displacement and the more CFM (bandwidth) you need. How much gas you have in your tank (web content on the page) is irrelevant to bandwidth because bandwidth is a measure of how fast you are accessing that content, just as MPG is a measurement of how fast you consume gas.

I agree with locking them, but not deleting them.

Using trader feedback for one will link you to the thread, which could help you decide to buy or not to buy from someone.

Deleting them would make them invisible to us, but I think it is still stored on the server for the board. So bandwidth wouldn't be affected.

thanks for explaining the bandwidth thing...:Handshake

as far as " finding out what something's value is." you really only know...what someone was wanting for the item...you never know what it sold for...
