Just got a quote from the trans shop on our c-5 about replacing a broken reverse band. $750.00.....$20.00 part, the rest all labor...........someone tell me this is an unrealistic price..........isn't it?

We just lost reverse yesterday, all the other gears work..........

Sure sounds that way to me. I'm pretty sure all you have to do is pull the valve body to replace a band, and that's not hard. Trans doesn't even have to come out.

If you're sure that's what the problem is, I would get the part and do the job myself if it were me.

I'd get a price from some other places also. I had my whole tranny rebuilt for $450 and he had to replace about $50 in other parts.:)

Are you sure they are not completely rebuilding the transmission for that price?

If he started at $750, and let you talk him down to $550, then he was definitely trying to screw you in the first place.

I would find someone else to do the work.

First off, let's look at the whole picture. Did the price include removing and installing the trans? Second, to change the band's, the trans has to be diassembled, cannot do it in the car. Strut's, yes but the whole gear train has to come out the front. Am assuming the guy is like myself, if you are going to all that work, might as well put a rebuild kit in it and inspect everything. If you are taking the tran's to him, then the price is way to high. Is it really a C5, or is it a C4? Let us know how you come out.

    C-4 with a C-5 servo........we supplied the rebuild kit.....

Yes, he is doing everything......I would assume 550 is reasonable considering the work involved........I don't want to mess with it....so we'll pay for convenience.......I freak every time I turn around with this car...if it's not 500, it's a 1000, or 2000, or 3000....noone has any numbers in between it seems.........so just another 5000 to go, and we will have a 2500 vehicle.......we hope.

My rebuild for $450 was a guy that rebuilds trannies in a shop during the day. He does some for the guys at the track at night. And this was taking just the tranny to his house. $550 is not unreasonable in that case.:)

In order to replace the rear band the transmission has to come out, and be torn down right to the output shaft. That band almost never goes bad. the servo seal does though and you can do that in your driveway in about two hours.
contacy me at paulstephens @ q . com and I will explain how to do it and what you will need. If you have a 3/8" torque wrench and some socket wrenches you CAN do this.

Thanks Paul, we've had it rebuilt, and it is done. So far, it is working great.........we're moving on to something a little less costly now...at least we hope.........
