So I finally had time to mess around with my comet and see exactly what I need to fix. When I first bought it (3 years ago i think) I got the motor to run with a lil starter fluid and gas down the carb. But since then its been sitting in the country rotting away (I restored a c10 instead). Anyways I hooked up a battery and found that after all this time all of my electronics are working (radio, headlights, wipers, blower motor, and the annoying buzzing noise). The only thing is that when I try to crank it, it craps out, electrically I mean. But I was really taken aback that a car thats 34 years old in an unrestored condition did that :thumbs2:, I mean my c10 is an 86 and had a crap load of electrical problems, I ended up been lazy and just replaced all the wires.............

Anyways down to my point, a bloody rat made a nest where the battery was and decided that chewing on the battery lead cables is fun........... where can I order battery trays from, and will the "universal" lead cables from o'reilly work, cause these cables look kinds different?

yeah!! they'll surprise you sometimes my 74 sat outside uncovered untouched for about 20 years, and i knew i was going to have to rebuild the motor but just for kicks we tried to get it to start and poured some gas in the carb and hooked up a battery and it started:yahoo:........... then died
I was amazed a 33 year old 302 was driven daily for about 13 years and parked and sat for about 20 years and was never turned over or anything and it started right up

If you have a 74 Maverick and it's a stock automatic it's a c4. If your going to put in a 289 i's check to see that it will bolt up to the c4. Somebody else can chime in but i believe they changed from a 5 bolt to a 6 bolt bellhousing sometime in the 60's.:)

there are still a few 5 bolt 289s out there, but rare. I know of one in my town. I think to be five bolt it would have to be 63 or 64 model. 65 on should be 6 bolt:)
