I got some more seat time in my Mustang but didn't do so well. I broke out by .004 in the original eliminations and eventually in the consolation race by the same amount (I finished fourth).

The only excitement I had was when a gal tagged my left rear fender getting her huge Mark VIII to the lines.:slap: Received minor paint damage. I gotta paint the entire car anyway.

She felt really bad and tried to buff it out - no bueno.

'Didn't even offer any form of restitution (Hey, old men need loving too!)

    I'll gettem next time! :grrrrrr:

    Did you race?

Rain, rain, go away. Second race day in a row we got rained out after a few rounds. Only good thing about it was I was still in and got a share of the split purse rainout money. Had won first round against a cheby by breaking him out, then went up against an 84 stang with a 460 in it. Have beat him before but it comes on fast after 330ft, my little used parts 302 was running 7.30's at the 1/8h and I focused only on that. The 460 dialed an 8.95 to my 9.47 for the 1000ft pass, .507 light for me and .567 for him, am really into the throttle and focused on shifting on the 7000 programed tach light. Perfect run at 18th mile and he is not in my mirror, finish line leaps out and I decide to burp the throtttle once for safety sakes. Stupid move on my part, he pulls up along side at the stripe and crosses at .001 ahead with a 4 over run. I smack myself in the helmet and make the trek to the tower to put up the 15.00 , one time, buy back rule.

Next round I draw youngest son in his stang, had a .4999 red the rd before so has also coughed up 15 bucks. He is running another not so high dollar motor I built, dials a 9.33 to my 9.51 ( weather is turning windy and blowing straight at us). He gets a .494 red and I sleep on the tree but run a 9.52. He also breaks out at 9.29, could have cut any decent light and maybe beat me but was going to put the old man away with a .500. Rain commences and that was that. Will post another unbelievable story on the oldest son's adventure with the Maverick, he had won three in a row before the wet stuff came, but should have been on the trailer after the first time trial. Later.

You do what you got to do.

Here goes a story that reminds me of my early days of racing dirt tracks in the midwest in stock cars and midgets. Sunday at the strip all three of our cars are prepared for the day, mavmans four link is adjusted for the last time and my fairmont is started and seems ok. Other son's stang has got new plugs and rotor which eliminates his top end miss that plagued it for awhile. Previous post tells of our days attempts at the big money. Now to the maverick, Todd makes his first time run and it is way off the pace and is missing badly, back in the pit we all watch as he does a look see under the hood. Plugs and wires ok so next step is pull the cap off the msd distributor, rotor ok, cap ok but oh, oh, the culprit is down below. A 3/8 by 1 , grade 8 capscrew is wedged against the pickup wheel. Where in the hell did that come from says I, sabotage is blurted out of someones mouth and I furiously argue that point.

Finally determine that it had been dropped in there at engine assy but was not doing any damage until it got drawn into the magnetic pickup and then proceeded to break an ear off the wheel on the shaft. Lesson learned, when working on open devices(distributor, carb, intake etc) cover the damn things up! Well now what to do about the problem, pack it up and go to the house or try and improvise a solution, try to find a 351w dizzy to get some parts or install for a fix. No such luck, Todd finds the broken ear and being it is steel he says maybe he can weld it back on, I am scheptical because you would have to remove the brass gear and shaft which would probably be to time consuming to get back in the programs schedule.

Todd says that if he takes the thing to the track owners shop, he thinks he can use the mig to tack it back on enough to work. Not that I don't have confidence in his abilities after watching him re do the chassis work on the mav, but this is pretty small space to be sicking a welding apperatus into and getting a good fusion. Away he goes to the shop on the four wheeler and I go on to make another time run, on returning he is installing the thing and hooking up wires. Holy crap, it fires up and timing is set, goes up to make another attempt. The damn thing is a running like a scalded cat,1.29 60 and a 6 something 1/8th, turns a 8.46 in the 1000. Man, I am amazed as is everyone else that was in on this quick fix, figured the damn thing would break off at high rpm but since it really does not touch the magnetic pickup anyway it stayed on and he went on to win three in a row before the rain ended the day. A rear gear change should get it into the low 8's next race day. Remember some of the crazy stuff we used to do on the stock cars in my day, but this one tops them all. New distributor is on its way but this one will be set aside in the emergency parts box. Racing is so much fun, we can't stand it. (y) :bananaman
