Well, truly, it's a garage find. Anyways, I just recently picked up my 1972 Comet GT after looking for a decent condition Maverick for quite awhile. It's been dormant in a garage for the past 10 years or so. My boss's sister just bought a house, and he told me that she said "there is an old car in the garage, I need it gone". Come to find out it's an original 1972 Comet GT, a bit rough around the edges, but a complete car nonetheless. Specs as follows vin: 2K3ITxxxxxx body: 62B Color: 6C9A Trim: LF Trans: W Axle: 3 DSO: 51 Looks like somebody transplanted a later model 200 into it, as it has full late 70's smog equipment. The car has 4 wheel non-power drums, 5 lug, yellow exterior with the black stripe and a white painted top. It has some dents and dings, and has been repainted the original color at least once, but it is what it is. The car has an Idaho Falls dealer tag on the trunk, and seems to have seen some salted roads before. The floor pans look good so far, but there is some rust on the underside of the trunk around the gas tank, and where the quarters meet the trunk down at the bottom is rusted out. Drivers door has some rot, and the battery tray area is pretty rough. I already have two Fords right now as it is; a 1988 5.0 Mustang GT that is my toy and a 1988 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe for my daily driver. I don't truly have the room for the Comet, but for $250 there was no way I could pass the car up. Yes, that's $250!!! I figure since it needs quite a bit of work and the original motor is long gone, I'm gonna swap in a mild 302 and keep it an automatic. Debating if I want to go with an AOD or a C4, any recommendations? I have plenty of experience with the 5.0 fuel injection systems and debated making this one fuel injected as well, but the only intake I can think of that will clear the strut tower braces is a Cartech Box upper, and that's pretty much for forced induction or high RPM drag use only. So I guess carbed it will be! Anyways, I may do a build thread on it, just because I've never done one before and this is the 3rd car I will be building from the ground up. The first was my 1972 AMC Hornet, and then my 1988 Mustang. Been reading the site now for a few days, and have already learned quite a bit of good information! Thanks everybody, and I'll see you around.
Tried attaching photos from my phone, hopefully they worked! Thanks for the warm welcome everybody. This seems like a tight knit community here, reminds me a bit of the AMC forum I was on. Everybody trying to help everybody else; I've noticed that when you are working on cars with harder to find parts than normal. These are a few pics right after we drug it out of the garage. Unfortunately all the windows had been left up and the heat had caused the back window to shatter outwards from all the pressure. All 4 tires were flat and glued to the pavement, and both drums in the front were locked up. One broke loose after getting on the trailer, I still need to break free the passenger side. I'm gonna swap over to disc brakes instead of spending the money to rebuild the drums. Might as well spend a little extra up front and upgrade to discs than to spend money getting the drums working, then want to upgrade down the road. Debating using a scarebird kit, the one with bigger brakes requiring 15" wheels. The rear will be getting Crown Vic disc brakes as well.
Love it, makes me want to get another project instead of finishing my own. Welcome to the site from east bay.
